ATI Radeon LE/DDR issues

I'm reading Anand's review on the LE and to quote:

ATI agreed to this arrangement, given one condition: that the Radeon LE cards would be sold in the Asian market only. Estimating a large demand for slightly slower and cheaper Radeon DDR cards in this market, ATI said that Althon Micro
could sell Radeon LE cards at a lower clock speed than the Radeon DDR as long
as ATI's powerful HyperZ
technology was disabled on the card's BIOS.

So all that's different is the card's BIOS? Now i'm really curious. Is there anyway to flash the LE card's BIOS with a regular DDR's so that it recognizes itself as a DDR? I know that overclocking and a few registry entries will make up for this, but I'm just curious. I know with the old Voodoo3 cards, you could flash them to hell and back 🙂 Anyone have any ideas?
 
Flashing doesn't solve the hyper-z being disabled in direct3d. Just use a tweaker...don't risk flashing since some people messed their cards up while trying.

No, the actual cores are supposedly ATI rejects. That is why the LE core is clocked at 148MHz versus the 166MHz OEM and the 183MHz Retail. Also, the memory on the retail Radeon DDR is 5.5 verses the LE's 6.0. However, several people have had no problem overclocking the LEs to run at the same speeds as the OEM and even the retail cards.

I'm convinced that the cores weren't rejects......I am thinking ATI just wanted to sell a cheaper version for the asian market...that's it.....if they were rejects then there wouldn't be so many o/c stories.....mine running at 191/191 core/mem sure doesn't seem like a reject core to me......and that's not even the limit of my card.
