Hi!!
I will be upgrading my computer soon and have been thinking about the ATI Radeon DDR 64. I have heard it has some problems in 16 bit. What are your experiences with it? Can you still play games in this mode. Or should I go with a Voodoo 5? I don't want to purchase a GeForce because I want a card that has good 2d.

On the side, a friend told me that the OEM versions of the Radeon 64 DDR is clocked different than the retail version. It is clocked at 166MHz instead of 183 MHz. Is this true? I hope not since I am looking at an OEM version.

Thanks in advance.

Yes it is true, the retail is clocked faster than the oem version, but it really doesn't make much difference, if any at all. As for the 16 bit, it isn't as fast as the gforce in 16 bit, but I wouldn't say it has "problems" with it. I play half life with my 64 meg radeon and it get the max frame rate possible for that game.

actually Half Life can run at 32-bits. Radeon's 16 bit doesnt have any problems, except it looks worse then other card's 16 bit resolution. However Radeon beats all in 32 bit resolution on quality so it doesnt matter too much to me.

hey mustangsvt, did I ever tell you that I used to own a saleen? and that I now own a contour svt? just thought it was weird that we have similar system specs and also similar taste in automobiles. Actually if your really into high end mustangs I can tell you the issue of 5.0 magazine that my friends mustang is in, 95 saleen 351 esque kit car with 730 HP, it is nice.

But onto the topic what board are you using with your 450a and radeon? does it have a rev 1 agp slot or a rev 2?

edit I also play halflife and that game looks fine to me in 16 bit, much better than my v3 2000, I am using the latest "recommended" drivers-not beta

My shortcut to launch Half-Life looks like this: D:\SIERRA\Half-Life\hl.exe -32bpp -console -noipx. I also have my desktop set to 32 bit. Not sure if that is needed. BTW, the -32bpp works in Quake 2 also.

Hey, thx for the 32-bit tip, I didn't know about that.

Flubber, the 16-bit performance for the Radeon is not up to other cards like the GForce2, but in 32-bit it owns everything. Picture quality is awesome, though you may find the V5 FSAA implementation to look better. The Radeon is a close second there. Overall, I love it. :D

Mustangsvt, I'm still dreaming, but one day I hope to have a custom made Saleen Cobra with that funky mystic paintjob. I just need to win the lottery or get my CCNE. :p Right now I have a 95 Contour, not the SVT but I do have the V6 in it.

to own a Saleen Cobra would be a dream come true... 700+ HPS??!?! WOOOHOOOO!!!!

BH6 with hmm rev 1.0 agp port. im sure MX will work on these too as i dont think there was problem even with Geforce2 GTS or Voodoo5 which are major power bustin cards.
