ATI Radeon HD 4870

I think that I am not getting the FPS i should be getting. I have upgraded my CPU to an AMD X2 6000 from a 4600 and performance has decreased in games such as Source games and Unreal engine games! I have no idea what the problem is I have tried different motherboards, CPUs,and RAM. I dont know if a PSU can cause it not to get enough power or if I have a faulty card. Thank you guys for all the help!

In Team Fortress 2(ctf_2fort with max ppl) at 1280x1024 at all high, 2xAA,16AF gives me:
43-20-89

In Unreal tournament 3(containment map with 10 players) at all high at 1280x1024 gives me:
40-17-100

Are you talking about TF2? You might be getting those drops into the 50s because of your CPU; the game by default only uses one core. You can use mat_queue_mode 2 to enable multithreading in Source games, but at the cost of reducing stability (makes TF2 crash within an hour or so for me).

Source games are pretty CPU dependent. If those are the games that you don't think are performing as well, you need to go with a faster CPU (Core 2 Duo/Quad @ 3.2GHz+ for instance).

Well the thing is that my friend is running a AMD X2 4600 with a 9600 GSO I believe and he gets 100 FPS constant he never drops off and he runs at all high at 1600x1200 and i think i should get more seeing as i have newer and better stuff

In what game?

Also, a PSU wouldn't cause FPS rates to change. It could cause instability, random reboots, and limit overclocking, but it won't drop FPS rates.

run other games

try a couple of Synthetic benchmarks like 3dMark06 and Vantage

it is impossible to tell from one game 😛

and either you have enough power - or not - lack of power won't affect frame rate directly - you will have other issues
... what is that 800watter in your case?

Here is my 4870's FPS with HL2's LC at 16x10 - fully maxed/4XAA+16xAF .. but then it is cpu dependent, and i am running e8600@4.0Ghz

204-111-301

with my CPU at stock 3.33Ghz and the same 4870 i get,

150 - 47 - 290

Its a very genric brand Power Up, it met all the rquirements for my card and computer i will run 3D mark later today and repost afterwards, i also played Unreal tournament 3 and get about 55-60FPS average on all high at 1280x1024

you are at 12x10 and i am at 16x10, so it is not a fair comparison, but UT3's Containment Map, fully maxed + 16xAF - e8600@3.33G and 4870 gives me

83-41-201

with e8600@ 4.0Ghz, same everything:

89-46-235

you can see Source is a LOT more CPU dependent

yes, try a lot more games/benches and try O/C'ing your CPU

That isn't the problem is it? Besides the low bottom fps

didn't you say there was no difference at whatever resolution you ran?

did you even try 600x480?
:Q

OK, we know something is wrong .. what about reformatting and reinstalling your OS

you mentioned you have a Dell system .. does that mean you are using a restore disk?

are you even able to update all your drivers?>
😕
