Tried installing following manufacturers instructions and supplied drivers (version 6.14.10.6404-7-962-031202m1-012924c), got a corrupt Win XP 'Welcome' screen.

Downloaded latest drivers from ATI website (CAT 4.7), same problem.

Previously had an NVidia GeForce 2 MX400, had a scan of the forums for some help and tried the following:

  • Checked CMOS, no settings present for AGP aperture/Turbo etc.
  • Uninstalled ATI Control Panel
  • Uninstalled ATI driver
  • Rebooted into safe mode and ran Driver Cleaner 3 for NVidia then for ATI
  • Disconnected my Internet then re-booted
  • Re-installed MOBO chipset drivers
  • Re-installed DX 9
  • Re-installed CAT 4.7
Rebooted - same corruption as previous

Is there anything else I should try, or could the card be duff?

My system:

Gigabyte 7VT600-L (VIA KT600)
Athlon XP 2600+
512MB DDR400 pc3200
128MB Radeon 9800 Pro

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the club!
My 3 month old BBA9800Pro also gave me corrupted screen, at first in was in WinXP, but a couple of days later it also showed at boot screen.
One time I reinstalled driver and it cured the problem, but didn't last long.
After fighting with it for 3 days, I've got myself a 6800GT, and request RMA of 9800pro.:frown:

Did you completely uninstall the nvidia drivers? If not, try using driver cleaner. Also, uninstall ATi drivers too (completely). Then re-boot the pc. When it asks if you want to search for new drivers for the newly detected video card, select no. Then just go to where you have the new catalyst 4.7 drivers and install those. Re-boot and everything should be okay.

Had something similar happen to me. But now everything's fine.

Have done exactly what you said, to no avail. Tried this several times in fact, using Driver Cleaner each time, not installing the generic drivers and then installing CAT 4.7.

The card works, very slowly, with the generic drivers (as I'm currently using now to seek help). It's when I install the ATI ones and re-boot that the problem occurs.

Could it be my monitor -Iiyama A702HT Visionmaster Pro 410?

What about a seperate power supply for the video card? I've currently got it routed through my one and only hard drive (as directed to by the installation manual).

Getting desperate.

I have to tell you that I have had several ITI cards including my current 9800 PRO and when they stop working they do. I had the same problem you are having, so I got read of my Soyo KT400 board and got me a Gigabyte one, It only worked for a month so, again I got read of that board and bought an Abit board which has been running for about 3 months now without a single problem.

I tried everything suggested in this and other forums with no luck. The funny thing is that I could use any Nvidia card on those boards and they would work just fine.

If I were you, I would get a different motherboard.

You don't just change the mobo because a video card is not working properly. Only time you change the mobo is when you're not geting any video signal at all after making sure you get the signal on another mobo.
Have you tried Cat4.6? ATI did something funny to Cat4.7's OpenGL that CS/CZ don't like it.

What a mess.

It's not the monitor, and it's probably not the motherboard.

The first thing to do is to format and reinstall XP; you had an nVidia card before and drivercleaner can only do so much. It will take you less time than messing around with safe mode and such will.

If a clean install of XP doesn't solve it, it is almost definately a hardware issue, and is more than likely your graphics card.

Typically when a graphics card is hosed it will show artifacts everywhere; Windows and DOS.

I've got to the root of the problem - not enough power coming through!!!

In desperation, I looked for any physical problems with the card, seating etc. and thought I'd try a sole power supply for the card. After much spaghetti, I got the power supplies re-attached to all the components, re-installed CAT 4.7 and voila it worked!!!

I have to say that the performance for the money (110 English quid) was worth all the effing about!!!
