the other thing is that ATI basicially has one chip design and ones that fail the high end specs are simply marketed as pro instead of XT.

But that wouldn't explain the X800pro VIVO's that are currently being successfully modded to XT's. It doesn't seem like X800pro VIVO's failed at all and were rather just disabled.

Appopin manufacturers 2 types of video cards. One mid high end, and one high end. He sells them for $200 and $300 respectively. After a while, he is wondering why none of his high end cards are selling even though they blow the mid high end card out of the water. He learns that people are only buying the mid-high end card and modding it to be the same as his high end version. So people are taking advantage of Appopin's design and getting high end cards for mid high end pricing. But Appopin is ok with this because he doesn't mind having all those high end cards on the shelf and not moving. He is fine with the fact that people are getting his high end card without paying him for the high end card. Sort of "stealing" from Appopin. If you don't get my point now, please tell me how I can explain it to you in a more fundamental way. Oh yeah:

I never know what the hell you mean with your dumb A$$ smiley faces appopin. It's like your skitzo or something. They are called emoticons for a reason. So I can tell when your joking, angry, sad, etc, etc.

Your "style" sucks and is confusing for someone trying to get the "feel" of what your talking about.

And the next time you so decide to say that I have "no point", why don't you just ask me if you didn't understand what it was?

:|

I am not disagreeing with you.
I just have a question about your analogy.

Why would he not mind if he cannot sell his $300.00 cards. He only sells his $200.00 cards in this scenario, which is good. But, not selling his $300.00 cards is a loss for him, isn't it? It is in a forcasted revenue in his budget, which is not going to happen.
What am I missing?

In this analogy it would be appopins fault for basically selling the $200 card at the $300 price when they are essentially the same product. What appopin is trying to do is maximize his/her yields by selling every chip. Once he sells the chip at the lower price its sold; a done deal. You cant look at what someone does with the product after you sold it to them and want more value out of it if the value to the customer is greater than what you thought it would be. Nothing is stolen. Thats akin to selling someone a beer then waiting to see how drunk they get and then charge them more if they have a lower tolerance to alcohol.

My analogy is fine. I'm comfortable with it. You see it how you want to. My point was to the OP. He probably felt like he was the one getting robbed when in fact, he was the one who was trying to get one over on ATI. I just thought it was ironic. Still do.

To Childs: I didn't say anything was wrong with it. People will do what they want to save a buck. This OP got the total opposite of what he wanted and I thought of how he must have felt when it happened. You know, sinking knot in stomach. "I just turned my 300.00 (guessing) 256MB 9800pro into a 9600pro." Ouch. Again, it's perfect irony. You both must think that I am against the whole flashing thing. I'm really not. Anyone can do what they want with their own stuff. Just don't try to RMA or exchange it when you screwed it up. Then your on my SH!T list.

if it makes everyone happy, i have decided to not return it and commit "fraud". since there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. reformatting and reinstalling it shows that it is still a radeon 9800pro.

Good, I'm glad your card is fine. Now stop screwing with it!!! :)

Appopin. WTF are you talking about today?

Let me clear this up for you.

Freeject quoted me and said, "Huh? What does ati lose when someone overclocks their pro?"

Feep tried to explain my point to him saying, "I think his point was that they lose they extra they would have made if the person had bought the XT instead of flashing a pro. Clearly they dont lose anything just by the overclocking. "

You chimed in saying, "in other words, there was no point "

And I responded you your post because it was my point Feep was trying to convey to Freeject.

Got it now?

Holy Crap. The guy cant follow the very thread he's posted in and all of a sudden I have dual identities.
Just WOW!!!.

And just last week, I was a teenager right?

You got some Freudian issues brother. Get it worked out...

Try to get a full refund on a riced Civic. I laugh at thee.

I never said anything about him returning the card, just objected to the notion that its stealing if you overclock/flash yout card to get more performance. :p

And I believe riced is the correct term for that analogy. Thats basically what most people in these forums do with the neon lights, 6 case fans, overclocking, case badges, etc. Just like they do to Civics, Neons, and Focus.

Yeah, the word riced though, it just struck me funny. Never heard it used to express how someone mods his civic/vid card. :)

its true that some people have been successsful in modding the x800 pro into the xt. But you will also find that insome cases the card will not mod to an xt becasue the one or more of the addititional 4 pipelines is crapped up. ATI reaslies this, disables the last 4 and calls it a pro. Since the pipelines work in sets of 4, if any one of the extra series is defective you wont be able to mod it. This malfunction causes no problems for use as a pro, but it wont run at an xt, at least not at full capability. In other words if u are planning to softmod an x800 pro its hit and miss whether or not it will work.

Its all relative. If someone wants XT performance, they can buy a 9800 pro and OC it. If someone wants more than XT performance, they can buy a XT and OC that.

Piece of sh*t.

It's people like you who cause hardware prices to rise. If you wanted a 9800XT why didn't you buy a 9800XT? Returning that part is fraud, and I hope you get busted.

I agree with you, he should get busted! :)
