ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Fan Problem

This fan has been acting up for awhile now. Occasionally my computer emits this awful groaning sound, and though it's hard to tell, I think it comes from the ATI fan. Just a few minutes ago, the computer crashed, and when I restarted, the Windows opening screen was really distorted. So I let the card cool down a bit and restarted, with the rig on its side so I could observe the fan. The fan started and stoped, slowly, and didn't start spinning normally until I gave it a push with my finger. It booted fine, and Windows informed me that the ATI driver was responsible for the crash.

I can't find any obstructions. Though my case is really dust-ridden, the ATI HSF is clean except for a thin coating on the bottom of the blades. When I spin the fan with the power off, it doesn't glide at all -- is it possible to oil the thing? The system voltages, as reported in the BIOS screen, are within range. I can't think of anything else, unless the card or the fan is dying. Help!!

it would be very hard since the dust is microscopic. i suggest buying a new aftermarket cooler like the AC series.

I'm in the same boat Xesh, except the AC solutions do not cover my AIW 9800 Pro card, so I'm looking for a "quiet" solution 😕

My fan was doing that also and have had others make noise or have a hard time starting.

I took the fan assembly off and pulled the fan blade/hub off of the motor shaft.

Then oiled it with Radio Shack small motor oil, it comes in a clear vial almost like a writing pen.

I have also used oil out of the little tin cans, as long as it is thin oil.

Mine all ran ok after that.

🙂
