newegg has the ATI radeon for $ 180.75 plus free shipping - though it says the card is refurbished plus its the 9700 and not the pro ? i just ordered a 9500 pro from ecost.com but thats on backorder till the 17th of this month. so should i go for this one or wait for the 17th and which card is better ? should i pay a little extra and get the 9700 or stick with the 9500 pro ?

newegg link

its most likely a customer return... i just saw it, was tempted to pick it up

update : i just bought one, and it still shows that its in stock.... I'm hoping they got a shipment of new cards from RMAs in from powercolor

so its safe to pick this up then ??? im tight on money guys so its all i can invest in a card ? and which one should i go for - the refurbished or the new one ?

Well, I'm in this one with you too. I've been looking for a new card to replace my GF2 Pro. I've got my fingers crossed, as I've never ordered refurbished from newegg before. Nice pick-up jahanzeb.😀

wow, newegg usually only has 1 of each item in their refurb section

that card showed in stock on their website for a couple hours at least, so they must have gotten a bunch of em

Here's a link talking about problems w/the 9700 nonpros (and fix) - Rage3d

Remember now everyone, Referb ATI's 9500 & 9700 could be very well returned cards after a person tried to do the software overclock and it didn't work. So conidering that? buy at your own risk, i have heard they(newegg) don't even test them when their returned, just resell them as referbs. Good luck

Thanks, I'll take that into consideration 😉

Make SURE YOU TEST this thing VERY THOROUGHLY.
You have been warned about buying other people's returned POO 😀

I've bought many, MANY refurbed products from NewEgg and have never received a bad one. I believe the products they sell as refurbed are not customer returns, but rather the replacements they receive from the manufacturers to replace customer returns. (This is of course only my opinion) Newegg seems to be a huge operation, as evidenced by their almost instant shipping practices and everything being sent out by FedEx express saver at less than ground shipping rates. I'm sure they don't have the time to test the products that come back from the manufacturers, but I don't think they would risk their reputation by selling untested customer returns.

jahanzeb, that was a great find on a great card!! I'm sure you'll love it!

- Cheers

I'm pretty sure Newegg uses us to test returned products. It's cheaper for them to sell them to us at a significant discount then to pay a tech to look at it. Oakenfold is right, make sure you test thouroughly.

Don't get me wrong, I love Newegg refurbs and if they don't work Newegg is always good about taking the refurbs back.

Also, make sure you get the card that was advertiesed. Sometimes Newegg sends the wrong card for refurbs. For example, They may advertise Powercolor Radeon 9700 OEM and you may recieve a Saphire 9700 OEM. This ussually isn't a big deal, bu someitmes the clock speeds are different. I once bought a Radeon 8500 OEM and it was advertised as 250Mhz clock speed, but the card I received was actually 230Mhz.

BTW, $180 for one of the fastest cards on the market is pretty hot.

I think you are right. I have purchased I bet 3-4 refurb video cards and 5-6 refurb MBs from Newegg. One of the video cards was DOA. All the other vids were fine. I can't say I have the same success with the MBs. They seem to work at first, but then I later find out why they were refurbs. One board, for instance, I set it up right away and it worked fine. I was using a 128MB SIMM. Later, after the refurb warranty was out, I put in a 256MB SIMM and NO BOOT. It would only take 128 MB SIMMs. Another board, the same, all looked ok. After the warranty was out, I tried to plug in TWO usb devices - no go. Data transmission errors. One USB device, fine but not 2. Had to get a PCI USB card to use my devices. I had another reburb board that was supposed to be a good overclocker, but it would only run at proc default, but I caught that before the warranty was out and no probs sending it back.

The point is, as I have discovered, it was sent back for a reason, and be sure to check EVERYTHING, which I think is hard to do in 15 days. I am just about the hang up buying refurb MBs, but I may still try a video card again.

i bought a dvd drive from them refurbed , it would work for a day or so, then stop working til reboot so i had to send it back

just remember, even in the worst case ... all you're going to be out is the $5 return postage to send it back to them

Would a NEW Sapphire Radeon 9700 OEM (non pro) shipped for 216 be considered warmish? If so let me know so I can grab one, then I'll tell where I found it 🙂

I was actually looking at buyxtremegear since they had a PS I wanted and have an improving reseller rating as of late, but anyway, why are these things still selling for 200+ after shipping on ebay? Are people that...nevermind. I'm just gonna snag one from one of the discount sites, that seems to be the best "deal" on these that you can consitantly get.

Well, got mine in the mail this morning. The card came in the original box with the power connector, manual, and several games. It was in excellent shape, and the agp pins on the card do show signs of an installation. I cleaned those off with a little alcohol since they were a little dirty. Uninstalled my nvidia drivers, removed my GF2 pro, and installed the card. Just my luck, as soon as I install the drivers, all hell breaks loose on my computer. All kinds of services not starting, what a mess. To make sure it wasn't the card causing all the problems, I swapped my current hd for my old one and installed windows2000, latest 4in1's and dx8.1b. The drivers installed fine and ran great. While I was at it I installed 3dmark2001 and wow how pretty. The nature scene at 1024*768 and 4x aa is really amazing. But, it looks as though I might have to reinstall windows, I think I'll tinker with it first.

From what I saw my card ran well with no obvious defects. Of course more testing is needed, but I hope you guys have the same success.😛
