It is just a rebadged 8500 chip so it fits into the whole 9000 numbering scheme.

Buy your cheap 8500 while you still can, before they call it a 9100 and jack the price up acordingly.

At least it does fit into the rating scheme, as the 8500 did out perform the 9000 in multi textures, so now people at least know the 9100 is faster than the 9000.;)

... this is a pretty good move by ATi, actuallly. They have a hell of a lineup compared to last years 7500/8500 being the only options.

9000 - 9000 Pro- 9100 - 9500 - 9500 Pro - 9700 - 9700 Pro

and odds are something coming in above 9700 Pro with R350 in the next 3 or so months =D

Why do they do this. I thought the numbering system was to match DirectX capabilities

9XXX -> DX9
8XXX -> DX8
7XXX -> DX7

Since they changed it for the 9000 reg. & pro I guess they might as well for the 8500/9100
