ATI Radeon 9000pro Vs. 9100

Both these cards are priced around $80.00 and I am going to get one of them, but I am not sure which one? What are the diffrences. I am having a hard time finding information about either. Which one is basically the Radeon 8500? Which one should I get?

The 8500LE?s were essentially re-badged and are now called 9100s to show they are faster than the 9000?s. The 8500/9100 are ATI?s old high end card and are faster than the new 9000?s (budget card).

The 9100?s usually have a 250mhz clock rate and the memory speed varies from 183 ? 250mhz DDR. The Sapphire model 9100 64MB is clocked 250/230 and is faster than a 9000pro by about 7-10%. Some 9100 cards are clocked 250/250 and are even faster yet.

The 9100 is basically the 8500 chip, but a lot of 9100 cards are only running 250/250MHz for core and memory clock speed. The 9000 Pro and 8500 (non LE) run 275/275 and some 9100 cards are also, just check before you buy.

A 9000 Pro vs. a 8500LE/9100LE will be a very very tight comparison and although the 8500LE/9100LE may well come out on top generally, the 9000 Pro will have a couple of advantages. If its against a proper 8500, the 9000 Pro is gonna be pushed out that little bit more, but is an acceptable card in itself and only drops a small amount of performance compared to the 8500.

Although to be honest, I expect the 8500/9100 to age better compared to the 9000 cards due to the difference in pixel pipeline architecture... but who knows.

Below is a link to a good article showing how a 9000 Pro compares to a 8500LE (250/250). If you have a 9100 running at the same speed (250/250), then the performance should be very close, if not darn near identical, to an 8500LE. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the link, very informative. I am pissed because my Radeon 8500 is better than all of these, too bad it isn't working and I can't get it replaced.
