There will of course be improvements, but don't expect too much., Since they add 64mb of ddr ram, the mostly noticeable improvements will be their Smoothvison, more FPS in higher resolutions.. stuff like that., If you don't use smoothvision offen, you will not notice the difference all the much..,perhap a a couple of frames or so.

what do u need 128mb of ram on a video card for?

-less texture swaps.
-smoother and more consistent framerates.
-the ability to play more games without using texture compression.

I know people claim that the 128 mb is likely to not have a big impact on performance, but I still want
to see some new benchmarks. I am also curious at other tweaks that ATI might have done that might
counteract this "high polygon bug" and what some people feel are problems with the memory controller.

If there is no drastic change then I'll probably get the 64mb retail 8500 or the gf4ti4400.

Anyone found any benches?

A while ago Bill Gates was quoted as saying " 640k of memory should be enough for anybody"

It dosent matter how far technology advances we will always find new ways to use it.

Digit-Life has a short blurb on 128MB cards, there conclusions are listed below. No 8500 tested, but they did have a 7500 and a GF3 Ti200.

1) All 128 MBytes cards are not useful much as there are no applications which would require such a size for acceleration of texturing.

2)Installation of such sizeable memory on slow cards is useless at all considering that the prices are much higher. Only if cards with 128 MBytes memory will be close in price to those with a smaller memory size the former can be more attractive.

3)Production of RADEON 7500 cards with a reduced memory bandwidth can make sense only if their cost will be close to their competitors.

4)One of the merits is that ATI's got a line for different market niches. Besides, it is beneficial for the company to focus on production of just 2-3 chips taking previous RADEONs out of the production
