9600gt looks like a winner to me, price is lowest, power consumption is lower, and performance is same ballpark as the 3870 or 8800. Now I'm waiting on the best deal on a good brand.

oh and the 3870 does blow the GT out of the water
- on Paper .. it has a tougher time actually pushing pixels

back in november I predicted that the 3870 would slowly catch up to 8800gt with better driver support over the long haul. lo and behold, the 3870 is catching up to 8800gt b/c of better driver support now that 9xxx series is here and nvidia is ignoring 8xxx.

They(my parents) are going to inherhit this old rig:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
GPU:....X1950pro or 6800 Ultra(a shame that the Ultra is nearly dead, artifacts all over the place if you use 3d)
Memory: Corsair 2x512mb PC3200 DDR1
Harddrive: Hitachi Deskstar 160GB
PSU: Silverstone Zeus 560W ( 38A on +12v)
Floppy and DVD reader they already have.

rv770 is supposed to be out in may. figure something out for 30 days and you'll be good.

I thought that RVxxx stood for video, while RDxxx stood for the chipset. I don't think the V has anything to do with value; just to specify what type of part it is to avoid confusion.

we just upgraded X1950XT with an HD 3870 (sapphire's toxic vapor cooled edition) ~$160 AR. . . .didn't think it could get better than X1950 but it is better. we can now see all the way across the battleground in WoW. . . .i decided to upgrade cause the prices for the X1900's on ebay are really good; i can run Folding@Home on the 3870 & the new card is super cheap for what you get (less than what i paid for the X1900 & X1950).
