I am building my parents a new system. They're interested in buying an LCD monitor, so I am looking for a videocard that offers excellent 2D image quality, but can also run 3D games at a decent framerate AND comes with DVI support. (I don't expect Radeon 8500/GeForce 3-like FPS scores, but it would be nice if it could provide acceptable quality in games such as Counter-Strike and Unreal Tournament.) At the same time, however, it shouldn't cost them an arm and a leg. (The monitor will take care of that already... both arms and legs are gonna be gone after this one, I'm afraid.
)
Based on my experience with the Radeon 64MB DDR ViVo, I've been checking out some of ATi's cards. The Radeon 32MB DDR VE looks good, but unfortunately it gets it's *ss kicked by a GeForce 2 MX in the 3D department -- that's not gonna cut it. Another card that sounds promising is the Radeon LE, but this card has no DVI connector -- what's the use?! Now I can get a 64MB Radeon VE which (according to the description from the vendor's website) supports DVI; however, it's got SDRAM. Is 32MB DDR faster than 64MB SDR?
Can anyone recommend a decent (32MB, DDR?) videocard with DVI support, one that is like a combination of the Radeon VE (in terms of DVI support) and LE (in terms of (potential) performance)? It doesn't have to be an ATi card, but I know they offer better 2D image quality than NVIDIA's GeForce 1/2,
Or, is it possible to use my own Radeon 64MB DDR ViVo by use of an adapter or something like that? (I've been looking for an excuse to replace it in favor of the Radeon 8500DV...
) Would it be possible to do this with a Radeon LE?
Last but not least (while I'm on the subject): is there a difference (quality, compatiblity, etc.) between DVI-I and DVI-D?
