ATI R9 295X2 or 2x GTX 980 SLI for 4k

Hi, I have a 4k monitor. I'm looking at buying a new video card. Which would be better for 4k, the ATI R9 295X2 or 2 GTX 980 in SLI mode? Thanks.

Why not 970SLI? Or how about 970 TRI-SLI for some booyashakka at 4k?

I'd get the 2 980s between those two.

Personally what I would do is pick up 2x970s instead, though.

One of the reviews showed comparable performance between 970 SLI and 295X2. For $660. I can't remember which review it was now though...

980 SLI should beat it easily.

970 sli seems to be faster up to ~1600p, then 295x2 passes in 3 display and 4k.

For the price 970 sli is a no brainer if you buy today. ($660 vs. $1000 and not a very big difference)

That is 970 SLI, I imagine 980 SLI is better.

Other thing to consider is a possible/likely dual GPU from nVidia. Dual 970 like GPU would give you a lot of options if you wanted more power. *If* it gets release you could check in with two of those and or one of those plus a 970.

4k needs tons of horsepower, I'd put 970SLI at minimum for it and if you have the right mainboard definately consider notching up to 970Tri-SLI or better.


Personally excited for this as option for 4kHD on a big screen (60"+), particularly with the HDMI 2.0 support in the 970/980. Given I ran 290 xfire in my setup, I could likely get away with 970 Dual GPU and a 970 on my z87 board.

For crazy performance, 3x GTX 970 is still under $1000. Think about that for a minute. 3 of these are same as a Titan...

the uk hw review I lined has 2/3/4 way 980 sli benches.

It looks like the 970 SLI beats the ATI R9 295X2 at lower resolution but once you hit 4k and above the 295X2 takes the lead. This might be due it's 512 bit memory width bus.

It would be nice to see a benchmark with the GTX 980 SLI and a R9 290X in crossfire or a R9 295X.

$1,100 980 SLI is only 18% faster than $660 970 SLI at 4K. I would either get 2x 970s and pocket the difference towards GM210s or Pascal or get 3 of them. With 4K you want the most graphics horsepower so $1,100 for dual 980s is inferior to 3 970s, while 18% more performance for nearly double the price is absurd.

Yesterday, nothing really beat the 295x2 for 'value' on the high-end for 4K gaming. Today, it is 3x 970s.
