The sound also depends on how the air flows in and around the fins as well as the heatsink plastic casing.

MS traditionally disables most performance enhancements in their betas. You can expect much better performance in a RC.

Have you heard the 7600GT in action? Wholly smokes. I own both the 7600GT and X1800XT and I would put the 7600GT noise above the XT.
The 7600GT was so bad that I replaced it with a VF700 and left the X1800XT stock as it was tolerable.
Either case both clans could use some improvement.

its got that whiney little fan on it hasnt it? those things suck.....my motherboard has a tiny 40 or maybe 60mm fan on it..it has to spin at 6000+rpm to get any kind of cooling going....it is by far the loudest thing in my case. by far

The 7600GT is not That bad. At least to me. Yes its loud when the computer first turns on, but after you log Windows it goes near silent. Even when playing games it doesn't increase all that much. At least mine doesn't. I also have mine oced to 605/1650. But anyways, people are more/less sensitive to noise then others are.

I hate my X1900XTX cooler. Sadly I ahve to run it at 100% while playing games or else my system locks up because the GPU temp goes to 90*C.

I even tried the Accelero X2, but that thing didnt cut it because of its lack of an exhaust system. GPU temps still were reaching 85*C with the X2 at 100% and still locking up my games when OC'd to 690/800.

I put the leafblower back on, set the fan speed to 100% and now my load temp never goes higher than 75*C, but I can hear my computer from the living room.

matt2, maybe you should try the zalman vf-900 but im surprised you got such high temps with the X2. all the reviews ive seen them in are max load temps being 65c.

I think that one of the main benefits to the X1 cooler is the fact that not only does it directly exhaust heat, but it also is a true 2 slot cooling system. With nVidia cards you need at least one slot directly next to the card open in order to get any decent airflow for the cooling, thus the 7900gt cooler really requires 2 slots for decent cooling, and the 7900gtx cooler needs a total of 3 slots. I persionally think that if ati went with heatpipes like the 7900gtx cooler it would probably be possible to decrease fan speed enough to keep decent cooling while retaining the true 2 slot design.

With the supposed slow down in DX9 apps, do they mean in Vista or XP? Because the emulation of DX9 is going to cause slow down.

I use rivatuner to throttle the fan to ~ 35% instead of the default 50% when playing games with my 7600gt

makes a HUGE difference in noise, it went from very annoying to almost silent

My 7600GT doesn't sound that loud during gaming. Sure, I notice it, but the rest of my system fans are fairly audible as well, so they sort of drone out the noise of my card. Doesn't bother me in the slightiest.

Yeah, add -10c more cooling power and a fan thats no louder than the current one is at ~40%, and you have yourself a great air cooling setup

What I always liked about these coolers is that they addressed the inherit flaw of video cards blowing hot air upside down. At least with these coolers the video card's hot air didn't get blown into the case with almost no room for the hot air to go. But the noise is just awful. >_< I hope they fix it.

Looks like I'll be going back to the red side on my next upgrade. Cmon NV!! Release some juicy bits to make me think otherwise!! Glad they're working on making this monster to be DX9 compliant as well. If HQAF continues to look the way it does on NV cards, I'll definitely be going back to ATI.

I'm hoping this card will use the new 0.08um process to help with thermals.

Nah, I also have an accelero x2 on my x1900xt, and even at stock speeds it reaches load temps in the 80's with the cooler at 100%. Of course, my room having nice and toasty ambient temps doesnt help either...

They could keep the same design for all i care, just make it much quieter somehow.
I agree with you and Running, n7. Just because wearing my headphones blocks out a lot sound doesn't mean I like the noise the X1800/X1900 coolers make. My cooler fan has rarely gone above 50%, but it is loud enough for me to hear it in BF2 when I'm not movong or shooting.

I considered an Accelero X2 briefly, but I like the heat-exhausting design of the standard cooler, although now that I've converted my V1000 to the V1000 Plus II format the heat from from the X1900XT-X should be exhausted fairly efficiently through the side panel.

Agreed. The stock cooler was a good cooler just not a quiet one at full blast. It kept the load temps for mine lower than the Zalman VF-900, and if you ever disasembled it you would have seen that it has two heatsinks that are pretty substantial in diameter. If they could just improve the sound output as well as maybe make a good looking cooler (EVGA has some of the best looking stock coolers IMO) while keeping its abiltiy to cool well, they'd do fine.

I think you meant heatpipes.

Are u forgeting what site this is. This is what we do here! And a monkey can put back on a Stock HSF after removing it for warranty purposes.
