Here in the quote from Beyond3D:

So what does this mean? I always thought that the number of pipelines/shaders would be an even number.

Read it again: "so that he wouldn't have to give the game away before it was announced officially."

He used a hypothetical odd-number to squish the possibility of any speculation on what the real specs would be.
(I didn't read the whole article)
