might be a re-post, but what the hell...

after viewing this information, I've lost some respect for ATI for their pathetic mistreatment of the term "optimization".

Everyone rushing to crap on ATi...

I am no fanATIc, but you nVdiots will be the first to cry if ATi goes out of business and the cost of nVidia chipsets increases by 100%!

actually, i'm anti-nvidia if anything

and what does that have to do with anything regarding ATI's driver fiasco?....because competition is better, any competitor to nvidia is in the good no matter what they do?...yeah right.

I'm neither fan of nVidia, nor fan of ATI. I just need the best product and the company which will offer me that, will have me as a customer.

Here's a little bit of an article I saw at rageunderground.com ...

<< ATI responds (again) - Wilco @ 05:29 PM EST
Just got off the phone with Dave Nalasco from ATI discussing the "Quacky Driver" Issue.

What Mr. Nalasco did confirm :

- yes, we did do optimizations specificly for Quake 3.
- yes, we did it because it is being used as a benchmark in reviews of our cards.
- yes, we sacrificed imagequality to gain better framerates.

Right. We already knew that didn't we ?

What he didn't want to confirm :
- this is "cheating"

Hard to argue with that...

hm, i'm also not anti ati, i run on a radeon, its just that i thought nvidia was the scummy party all this time. This new developement really tarnishes ati's image.

going out of your way to degrade image quality without user input is not optimization

The problem with this is you basically lose control of what you can do with the product.

Regardless you what settings you have in display panel and Quake3 in-game, ATI "Quake 3.exe" simply overrides these settings, making game blurry.

optimization?...

i can lower texture quality and depth if i wanted to myself to increase framerates...you can't even turn OFF the "optimization"...what if you wanted image quality over performance?...these drivers suck my aSSSSSS
