ATI Overiding my Windows XP settings

In the process of building an Abit AW9D rig with an ATI x1900xtx. I downloaded the 6.9 drivers and installed in the normal manner along with CCC.

I use XP with sp2 and I set Windows to classic mode since I do not like XP mode. Also I elimated shutdown sounds, change the Startup sound and eliminate and change other sounds.

Well after I installed 6.9 cats the rig after restarting goed back into the "XP" mode (visually) and all the default sounds return. I right click the desktop and go into -properties- then -themes- and select "Classic Mode" and get the Classic Windows back and have to change the sounds settings once again. I have also changed the settings in XP mode for sounds but it reverts to the default settings on restart.

I have not liked ATI drivers for the most part, never have had an issue like this with Nvidia cards. I like the x1900xtx card, but this hyjacking sucks.

If you have any input it would be appreciated. I know this is weird, I hate to dump the card, but I wonder what else I have lost control of due to these ATI drivers.

Doesn't sound like the problem has anything to do with ATI's drivers.... at least its the first I've heard of this particular problem.

Did you have any driver other then the 6.9's installed on this system, including the default driver installed by Windows update?

weird never heard of that one...Has nothing to do with drivers, IMO.
Do this:

star>run>services.msc
Look for the "Themes" service and disable it completely. You'll never be bothered with the horribly kiddish XP theme.

Yes I had the windows drivers which are automatically installed when you first install the OS.

I need to try Gerson's idea.
Thx

I've never seen ATI drivers do that before either. Are you using any kind of Windows cleaner/evidence eliminator type program? If you are, it may be wiping out the personalized settings you've entered in Windows.

Ok
Following Gersson's instructions eliminated the isssue of Windows changing my Sounds settings back to Default if I shut dow or reboot.

But the XP style Start button and XP appearance of Windows (the rounded candy colored look) returns.

Some gain is better than nothing!

I have built many rigs, this sure is a strange one!

EDIT
Just to be sure I went back into Srart>run>services.msc to be SURE Themes was disabled.
Well I messed up apparently and it was not disabled.
However, it is NOW DISABLED:p and the problem is SOLVED!:D

thx much!

Hmorphone-
Nope not using any program as you mention, at least to my knowledge. I really don't even know what a program as such would be.
