Hi.
I just treated myself to a £130 Hercules9800pro.
After getting some cooling parts, its cooling consists of;
Stock Ramsinks. Stock rear heatsink. Artic Cooling VGA Silencer Rev3. Zalman 92mm fan bracket+92mm fan blowing accross all heatsinks/ramsinks on the card.

After incorrectly diagnosing some white dots as a memory clock problem, where as nature in 3dm03 & rhdribl got white dots in them;
I managed to get these clocks.
410/750.
Specifically; 409.15/375.85(747.70)

First;
1) Is this a good overclock for a 9800pro?
2) Asuming i had a 9800XT to hand, the above OC would be slightly faster than a 9800XT would it not?
3) Any tips on more 3D apps to test the card at those clocks. Like one that tests just the mem, and one for just the core?

Thanks in advance.

The 9800XT stock speeds are 412 for the core, and 365 (730) for the memory. So you're OC'ed slight above a 9800XT.

You might check out ATI Tool if you want to benchmark the memory and core individually.

I can't get it higher than 415 with a Giant III and 120mm fan.

Im using ATI Tool to overclock. And its a single 3d test for both core + mem.
A successful overclock in my eyes is perfect pictures in any app or IQ setting. So even if every game out there runs well, if 3DMark03 runs with artifacts, then theres obviously something wrong there.
How accurate/good is the auto speed finder in ATI Tool?

ATI Tool's speed finder will call any single bad pixel an artifact. I'd trust it, matter of fact I'm using it on my laptop to set different profiles (2D, 3D, battery). If you want, set a profile to start up with Windows that runs the clock at lower speeds to lower the heat output a bit.

I find the artifact detector thing useless.
The furry cube, at 450 core, had masses of yellow blotches on it, yet it said there were no artifacts!

Try running 3DMARK2001SE with high AA and AF. I've found things there that I couldn't find in 03.

In particular, set it to loop test #4 ("Nature") with AA enabled. It's grueling.

The "Pixel Shader 2.0" test in 3DMark03 is very tough on the core of a 9800-series card as well. The "Mother Nature" test is, too, since it uses pixel shaders very heavily for the water effects.

I have managed to o/c my 9800SE to 435 gpu and 370(740) memory. Unfortuneately i 'couldnt' unlock the disbaled pipes (well i could, but artifacts appeared all over the place so im thinking i was unlucky and got a 'buggered' card). I have nothing other than the sapphire stock cooler/fan, although i have a nicely positioned side case fan rite next to the gfx card.

Those clocks are certainly faster than those of the 9800XT, but i occured to me, had i been able to enable the locked pipelines (so the full 8 as opposed to just the 4), would i have been able to hit the same clocks or not? If i could, that would have been so cool! :)

>>>> i mean looking at BoomAM's numbers, i have certainly been able to achieve a faster gpu clock, although my mem is set a lil lower, and indeed i think its the mem clock that is a lil temporamental in regards to stability of the card. Anyways, BoomAM has 8 pipes going there whereas i only have the 4.

Yes.
The OverClockers UK Deal of the week. If you want one, then order quick, they`re selling fast.
About 4 hours ago, it (my card), did 410/750 in 3DMark2001 with both 6xaa/16xaf, and no aa/af on perfectly fine.
Ive just got in, ran RTHDRIBL, and its still fine.
I`d really like to find a way to get at least 430 core, but 410 is still more than my 400 target.
