ATI or Nvidia

A year ago I thought Nvidia was going to go the way of 3dfx, then I thought it would be ATI.

Who do you think will survive the video card wars, in the end?

There will always be competition between companies because ATi's X800GTO2 overclocks well, but Nvdia is the speed demon.

neither will go away.

but Ati is tiptoeing the 3DFX line by making the first run of their new cards for themselves and not sending chips to their AIB partners. Not a wise thing to do and a sure way to alienate companies who make and sell your products. Smartest thing Nv ever did was made sure they stayed away from selling their own boards retail.

isn't this kind of like asking whether intel or amd will die first? this question seems to have no bearing on reality...

I'm sorry..but this is really a pointless thread. We all know that for now on ATI and Nvidia will be the primary GPU producers in the world. Some may try to get into the market but there's just no competition.

Do we really need another one of these doom and gloom threads? Neither GPU maker is going anywhere. Try XGI if you want to predict anyone's demise.

I think you need to stop taking such a polar view; neither company is going out of business anytime soon so you can stop thinking one or the other is going out of business.

ATI has Xbox360 and Revolution (if it sells any units 😉 ) to line their pockets, while Nvidia has the Playstation 3.

This is aside to their sales in motherboard chipsets, etc. They've diversified just enough that even if one's video product is vastly inferior (which hasn't happened yet), they can survive it until the next generation to fight back.

The only way I could see nVidia or ATi dying off is a third contender joins in. With the two of them targeting each other I can't see either being able to make a mistake large enough to kill it off.

3dfx the cyrix of graphics cards, both met the same fate in the end.

This statement just proves you know nothing about ancient graphic cards.

Cryrix didn't started the CPU market.

3dfx was the first to market a true 3D Card.

People playing original Quake had a bump on the image quality just like the impact for sound as the original Sound Blaster had back in the Castle Wolfenstein days....

It is a pitty we don't have today cards from them. Since they went down, new graphic card prices went from 250 $ to 500 and up.

A year ago you were dumb... no offense.

isnt there a company called s3 thats trying to enter the gfx card market?

S3 have released a few video cards which are for the lower price sector of the market. I had the chance to try out a S3 Deltachrome S8 and was surprised by it's better than expected DX9 performance. It's score of 800 with 3dmark 2005 was only 200 points lower than the Geforce 5900 XT I was using at the time and much better than the Geforce FX video cards in it's price range. 🙂

So far S3 have the deltachrome, gammachrome, unichrome and omnichrome.
