I've recently switched to a 8800gts from an 1800xl, and am very pleased with the gaming side of things.

I'm not so happy with the video playback. AVI files played through VLC look absolutely awful. The same files with the same settings looked much better with my old ATI card.

I cant seem to find any deinterlace controls in the nV control panel.

So help please, I know its probably something I'm doing wrong but I'm not used to nVidia cards.

Cheers

Sorry about the edit to the title but thought I'd get a reply this way

Bit of bumpage and some more info.

Running vista32 video playback on WMP is not too bad but I get a bit of screen tear. Its not as good as it was with my 1800XL but it is watchable.

Are there any 'hidden' options in the nvidia control panel for video playback? The controls that are there are rudimentary to say the least.

I'd really like to sort this out before I have to return the card.

Cheers

Do you have Nvidia's Pure Video decoder installed? I believe you can try out a demo from them, but if you want to keep it, it will cost you about 20 bux. I ended up buying the cheapest Pure Video decoder from them and it works nice. I actually just watched SuperMan Returns again last night. Looked really clean and my attention drifted away from the IQ and more towards the movie itself.

Also, did NVDVD come with your 8800?

No idea tbh, got a 8800gts myself and so far it works fine. Videocards should just work straight out of the box though. Do you have a widescreen btw? I don't know if ntune or rivatuner could help 1 bit, but it might be worth trying out. I'm assuming the latest drivers are installed.

It could be the player the OP is using. Which player do you use and did you have to install Pure Video decoder to get it to work?

Just curious.

I'd like to use VLC player.

I'm running a 24" monitor and I've noticed the pictures ok when not scaled up (running in a small box) its when it is upscaled to full screen it looks rubbish.

I tried the trial of pure video but it seems to do nothing, I cant even find any controls for it.

I've got rivatuner and there dont really seem to be any controls for video playback there.

I love the card for its gaming but (and I never thought I'd say this) I really miss the Catalyst Control Center!

You can use the nVidia Control Panel to perform inverse telecline, noise reduction, and image sharpening. Go into the "Adjust Video Color Settings" and click on the "Video Enhancements" tab (you will need to be in the Advanced View to see it).

PureVideo doesn't work for AVI files; it's only for DVD's. If you want more image enhancement options, download the FFDShow decoder or, better, yet, download the Combined Community Codec Pack which includes FFDShow along with a ton of other decoders. FFDShow has so many image enhancement options that you'll probably throw up. :)

Cheers for that, I've tried those controls in the nVidia Control Panel but they havnt made any difference.

I have downloaded the CCCP and there do seem to be a hell of a lot of options there! On the default setting my video still looks bad,and I cant see the point of spending ages tweaking settings when my old card looked fine.

To be honest I'm getting a bit fed up with the situation and coming to the opinion that it would be easier to see if I can exchange this card for a HD2900xt.:(

I've played around some more and ,basically ,the only way I can get decent picture quality is to use WMP ,but the I get some weird screen tear half way down the screen.:(

This is for all video files including DVD's.

Am I the only one with this problem?

I'd be really grateful if some people with >=24" monitors could test this out ,as things only look crappy when scaled up to full screen.

vista32, 8800gts, forceware 162.22, VLC player, WMP, powerDVD and a few others tried, 24" dell moniter.

Cheers
