The X1900 XTX can put up a fight but ATI's cost is still quite a bit higher.

Huh? Not hardly. The XTX and 7900GTX are pretty even in price, with the XT being much cheaper. In any case, more cards and choices is better to me.

well ATI Should fix things in the R581 : New quiet Cooling system , less power consumption , lower temp than X1900XTX and higher clock speed at $499

What they mean is "cost to the company."

ATI's die size is larger, meaning more expensive dies.

Its hard to tell from the context, and now that the link is gone, its a moot point I guess.

G80, the eight generation powered with Unified Shaders.

Wait, I thought they were not doing unified shaders on the G80. Can anyone confirm or deny?

If R600 is DX10 they probably see it fit not to release them until Vista is close. Maybe beeing able to move to a smaller die size or add small improvements.

But if they are going to release 80nm R580 they'll probably name them X1950XT or something.

I hope it uses GDDR4 Ram. Since it just is now into mass production.

So ATI will relase refresh of a refresh.

Fuad is all over the place on this one. First he suggests that the g80 will be a unified architecture, when there is reason to believe that it wont be. Also, my guess is it will be called the r590, but the code name is of little importance anyway. The r580 needs to get cooler and quieter, and it looks like it's headed that way. Higher clock speeds are also likely, since this card might be going up against the g80.

I'm sure there was an interview with someone from NV where they said they were keeping them separate at least for the G80.

I think you are right, I am going to have to dig around and find that...

Cooler, quieter R580s is good news for all though.

This is very good news. Less heat and power :)

Not sure if they use GDDR4 or increase core clocks though.

but, they probably will just up the core and memory enough so that you dont even get it any cooler :S putting out the same heat with more performancfe

I always take things the Inq say with a grain of salt but this one makes sense. They reduce the die size with minimal work, thereby decreasing their costs in making the R580 cores. Most likely just a R580 core with a few minor adjustments to the core. Probably to fix any bugs that they might have found or to make a few improvements on the circuitry.

It seems likely more and more likely that ATI and nVidia won't release their new cores until probably around Nov or so. To try to catch the holiday season and the fact that it's at most about a couple of months away from the current release date of Vista. I think some of the folks who were predicting a July/Aug release for the new cards were doing so out of the previous 6 month release cycle plans that ATI and nVidia were suppose to follow. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case for a long while now.

We'll see if they get rid of two things that still convince me NOT to buy ATI at this time:

1) Stupidly loud stock fan.
2) High power consumption under full load.

Maybe i got lucky i run nvidia cards as of now but i just built a rig using a x1900xt powercolor and where is this loud fan everyone is talking about i ran this card loaded with rthdribl for many hours to test it for stability and the person i built it for plays wow for hours on end and he says its hardly audible. Now when the computer firsts starts up its loud for a few seconds then quiets rite down and under load its in the low 80's.?

Wonder if it would be worth it upgrading from X1900XT to "r580+"? I dont think it will be. Maybe if they have 700+ core & GDDR4 @ 1.8 GHz or something.

X1900XT works fine on a half-way decent FSP 450W PSU- $49.99

Might want to get a pinch of salt ready but....

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=30649

WE FOUND out one key thing about the new R580+ chip. We gave you most of the details here already, but we can now confirm that ATI's new chip can and will support GDDR4.
All cards after the R520 could support GDDR 4, but obviously the next generation GDDR 4 memory will simply work better with the new chips. The new Radeon X1000 generation memory controller has the support but obviously R580+ will have even better and more polished support.

Companies such as Samsung and Hynix have been sampling GDDR 4 from late 2005, so I guess by the time the 580+ is ready in late summer, there are unlikely to be many problems with memory shortage. GDDR 4 is a progression from GDDR 3 memory with some tweaks, squeaks and extra whistles.

Chiefly, it can work at very high frequencies. GDDR 4 should be in mass production this year. We don?t know when Nvidia plans to embrace this marchitecture but it could be with its G80 technology.
