ATI mobility Radeon X1600 / Asus A6Ja Color banding problem

im having a really really strange problem with my asus A6Ja, with a 256mb mobility radeon X1600.
The colors on the screen makes transistions between slight color changes, instead of smooth gradients. i can see this in both photos, graphics, when watching video files and when playing games.
This is really a big problem for me since i work as a photographer and need to be able to fine tune colors and lightness when working with my pictures.

I use the video card drivers on the disc that came with the computer. (these should be no more than like 2 months old)
One really strange thing, is that if i uninstall the drivers and reboot the computer, the colors show up as they should, but as soon as i (or windows) install the drivers, it looks just as if my screen is set to 16-bit color instead of 32-bit (but i have of course checked that it actually is set to 32-bits, however if i do switch down to 16-bits, i notice no difference in video quality).

Here is a photo of the screen when playing world of warcraft (on the highest color settings) where you hopefully can see what i'm talking about: http://saidkarlsson.com/colorproblem.jpg
But the same thing can be seen in everything, movies, windows, photos, graphics...

My guess is that this is driver specific, as not even ATI supports the mobility x1600 in their own drivers. Anyone else with this graphics chip that can tell me if you also have the banding?

I've tried the omega drivers aswell as running mobilemod with the latest official 6.2 drivers, but with the same result.

What can it be?
any help will be widely appreciated

This is kind of a long shot, but I wonder if the LCD is actually dithering the colors when the driver is installed. I assume you game with the lappy, and leaving the drivers uninstalled is not an option?

yes, without the drivers, the gradients looks good. Do you suggest that it's something wrong with the LCD? Or is it something i control by changing some setting?
No, uninstalled drivers are not an option, specially since windows doesnt support the LCDs resolution natively (1280x800)

I think dithering was mostly a problem with older panels, but it does look like dithering to me. whether the panel or drivers are to blame, I am not sure. I would guess the drivers. Did the drivers include any sort of extended settings? Maybe check in color profiles on the display properties.

But if it is the panels fault, why would it disappear when the drivers aren't installed?
Have checked the drivers for settings, but no luck...
