I'm thinking about buying an older Compaq notebook from the classifieds here. I'm just wanting to know a little more about the graphics it has. I've done a little research and it seems that it has the equivalent of a Radeon 9600, but on the stats page of Compaq it calls it an ATI MOBILITY RADEON (M6) 4X AGP... Are they the same thing?

I'm also wondering about upgradibility to the graphics, or is it probably integrated?

As you can probably tell, I'm a real noob when it comes to notebooks; so any help appreciated.

Thanks

It's integrated and won't be powerful. Would probably run current games at 800x600 at low settings. That's as high as I would even try to run games at...

Aah, that kind of sucks... So would say it's comparable to like Intel integrated graphics or would the ATi be a little better?

My old Gateway lappy has the same chip in it, comes with 32MB of dedicated VRAM. It's not a gaming chip, but it's better than IGP as all your system RAM is left for the system.

Thanks man, I think this one actually leeches off of system memory since it says shared... Here's a copy and paste:

Video Graphics ATI MOBILITY RADEON (M6) 4X AGP and 3D architecture
Video Memory 64MB DDR SDRAM (shared)

I guess what I'm really looking for is if it is removable, to be able to replace with a 9700/9800 chip.

Thanks again

comparable to a 9600...no way man. i'd say comparable to a mobility radeon 7000..i think it is even slower than a 7000 but certainly not a 9600

Well, I just had a little chat with tech support and they say that this model is integrated onto the motherboard... Bahhh! So I guess I'll just keep the desktop for gaming.
