I am buying a laptop this weekend. I can afford either an Ati mobility 9700 with 64 Mb of VRAM (my preffered choice) or an Ati mobility 9600 with 128 Mb. The 9700 with 128Mb are just too expenssive and I cant really justify spending much more just for 64 Mb of VRAM.

Which is better at Doom 3, Half Life 2, Far Cry, etc.? I am not supper picky, I like to play at medium setting 800/600 or 1024 if possible

I can't find any benchmarks comparing these two! I'm thinking of getting the Acer 4001 LCi.

Thanks

The 9700 will be faster, even though it is technically not a 9700 core, it is actually the 4 pipe 9600XT core.

i dont think so, 64Mb is too low to play even ut2k3 at max settings without saturating the agp bus. 128Mb is where its at.

the mobile 9700 doesn't have a wider memory bus, just the desktop. The 128mb of ram on the 9600 is probably more worth while in this case although you should check the clockspeeds to make sure it isn't one of the really slow ones.
