I'm a FreeBSD user that likes to play some games once in a while. I'm about to buy an ATi powered notebook and I'd like to know if it will play games like Quake 1, 3 and 4 in FreeBSD as my last one did (nVidia powered).

I have seen some hacks to make it work, but neven seen someone saying its great ... so ...

Is it worth, pay a little less for an ATi one ? In the US, the difference is about $500 :(

thanks

The X1700 is only available in mobile form, got to look for it a bit differently I guess.

Even though, not in the mobile nor in the desktop :(

but the most significative issue is really the FreeBSD working or not ...

Why ATi doesn't release a native driver ?! that would be way too good :D

thanks for your input ;)

edit: there is indeed the X1700 webpage, there is not in the driver list ! even if you choose mobility. well, i bet this is no problem as all drivers may be packaged together ... :)

Windows-wise, the Radeons generally use unified driver packages. Not sure what to tell you about other OSes though.

thanks again for your time and info,

but the problem is that Linux (that has official ATi support) and FreeBSD use differente kernels. And even though FreeBSD has a Linux compatibility Mode, I don't how far it goes in terms of a kernel driver for rendering 3D games ... :(
