We tried to duplicate the screen shots that ATI supplied to us, and found that ATI seems to have misrepresented the micro-geometry detail of NVIDIA's 8X anti-aliasing method. The screen shots we took on our own with a GeForce 6800 GT, clearly show more detail than the screen shots distributed by ATI in their CrossFire presentation.

Finally, we contacted ATi for comment on this issue that we discovered and they agreed they too could not reproduce the lack of detail that is represented in the NVIDIA screen shot they provided us above, although they assured there was no intention of misleading us with these competitive image quality comparisons. This isn't the first and probably won't be the last time we will be witness to over-zealous marketing efforts, whether accdidental or intentional.

It's nice when companies lie to you to get your business, isn't it? ;)

Yeah, Nvidia is known to do that occasionally along with ATI.

Good catch by HotHardware and Thanks for posting this Rollo, I had read this before they updated it

Pretty dumb of ATi to circulate such images since obviously it IS a Missrepresentation of NVIDIA's IQ.

although they assured there was no intention of misleading us with these competitive image quality comparisons.

How could it not be their intention?

ATi's Probable Thought Process: "SLi can't do 14xAA, we'll sell that to the masses via images which don't correctly represent NVIDIA's 8xAA IQ. Most people won't notice and we can claim that we had no intention of misleading anyone if they do."

Gee, there's ATi showing what a "good and moral" company they are (according to the ATi supporters anyway)...

Is it any wonder I can't stand them?

I'm kinda glad that ATi is playing dirty. At least we can stop this nonsense about ATi being the Mother Theresa of 3D hardware....

LOL- more like the "Big Bad Mama" of hardware.....

This (640X480 0X0X) image represents our competitor nVidia's best image quality settings at 20X15 8X16X! See how clearly we at ATI dominate them even at a highly playable 16X12 14AA!

*SIGH* They all do this kind of crap. Look at the console companies...they're claiming to do 8 million Gigaflops and reheat your pizza at the same time. It's all BS until after the hardware is released & reputeable reviewers publish factual comparisons.

I'm just glad that more and more people see the crap that ATi puts out. They got beaten pretty bad with the 6-series, so the best counter they have is to cheat? Where did I hear this before? * cough * ATi shader day * cough *

For shame.

This is why you shouldn't listen to what companies say about their own products or the products of their competitors. They'll spin everything they can and yes, sometimes even outright deceive.

I don't usually jump into flamewars but that is just plain wrong. I've owned both (6800GT@Ultra and X800XT PE) and the ATI was overall faster. I can see why some people would say that the cards are equal as X800 cards are generally faster but 6800s had SM3.0 (not too important in my opinion but HDR effects in FarCry are pretty cool), but "beaten pretty bad" I think not.

You haven't been around long have you? Both ATI and Nvidia do things like this.

ATI has done less, however-and when they do make a mistake, they acknowledge it immediately. In this case, it is unreasonable to say with 100% certainty that this was intentional...the same cannot be said for driver release upon driver release from Nvidia. The 6000 series is neck and neck with the X800 series too---not sure what you're talking about there.

Expect more of this from BOTH companies.

I've been here longer than you, post wise and time wise.

nVidia have done nothing so far to put down ATi products, and have been well behaved since the NV30 dramas.

All the crap that has been flung since then in the video card world has been crap of ATi's making.

Just to repeat again, it was ATi, not nVidia caught lying about the competitions products (something they are extremely "talented" at). So don't say both when it is only one.

Edit: It seems rather ironic that nVidia started cleaning up their PR act and ATi's started worsening right around the time that Richard Huddy left nVidia to join ATi...

What about them? nVidia only stated that IQ was better than their previous generation products. They didn't specify which generation they meant.

We had a big discussion about this on beyond3d quite a while back, where I posted the actual audio of the presentation in question.

Oh and they never mentioned ATi in that presentation (in fact ATi was not mentioned at all throughout the entire nV40 launch presentation) - it was a comparison purely based on nVidia products.

Actually most of it is BS with no discernable time limit.

It's even nicer (from the company's POV) when their fanboy's lie/misslead for them.
