ATI hints at no price reduction?

Right now it doesn't make sense for ATI to drop prices. Even if fermi performs well, there currently still exists a market shortage in the high end GPU segment. The hd5870 is never and has never been fully stocked. Currently new egg has 10 models with only 5 in stock. Yes, plenty to choose from but they're all above MSRP. The hd5970 is nearly nonexistent. I don't regularly search of availability, but I've never seen it in stock.

Until, and more importantly IF, ATI sales start to suffer then they'll lower prices. Right now just be glad if the 5800 series goes down to it's current MSRP.

Someone posted this already but I will reply this time...

If AMD doesn't lower prices that would be a big mistake in my book. They should know nv's dirty money gets around and they need all the help the can get.

Of course ATI aren't going to hint at price reductions. That's one great way to lose sales, especially if they aren't totally sure they will be coming.

Why drop prices on a part and potentially lose current higher level sales on the assumption that it might be necessary to reflect the price of the competition.
Then consider the actual ATI guide prices of the parts, which are lower than the actual street prices, and it seems kind of obvious.

There is room for a solid $20+ drop probably on the 5850 and 5870 (and maybe even $100 on the 5970) before they are actually at 'official' price levels. So they might drop in price without ATI actually dropping the price.

If the GTX480 is only 10% faster than the 5870, but 20% more money, and nearly impossible to find for the first month or two after it's release then I wouldn't expect AMD to change their pricing.

5870s sell out here within days, so it doesn’t make sense to drop prices. Supply < Demand.

No matter how fast Fermi is, I think we all suspect it’s going to be pricey, possibly very pricey - because it too will almost certainly sell out fast.

As far as a price drop goes though it seems ATI and its partners are comfortable with how the models sit and with stock becoming a non issue for the cards; they don’t have anything to worry about it seems.

...not sure what Shane and ATI are smoking...

...but, yeah ATI has no reason to drop prices at this point.

The MSRP has changed since then AFAIK. I'm really curious by how much though.

It's just to urge those waiting for Fermi and price reductions to buy ATI ASAP...

Official HD5850 price is $279, official HD5870 price is $379, official HD5970 price is $599.
Street prices are higher.
ATI doesn't have to drop their prices for the cards to get cheaper.

Exactly. There are two different prices when it comes to ATI's 5xxx series. The MSRP and Street price. The street prices have been high since launch. That is the price I expect to come down first before ATI even thinks of lowering their suggested price. Fermi should force the street pricing down some if nVidia has enough supply.

They raised the MSRP of the 5850 by $20, they didn't change anything else as far as I know.

Locally, 5830s are now $275-ish while 5850s are $330-ish. Local store isn't stocking the cheaper, no frills 5850s anymore either. So, it looks like they used the 5830s as an excuse to keep the prices the same.

Right now it doesn't make sense for ATI to start reducing prices. I think Nvidia better get the price right for the GTX 480, if it only offers 5850 performance but has 5870 price then it's doomed.

No $199 5850 ATI, no sale here.

I hope Nvidia gives ATI run for the money, better competition= better prices.

I remember last year 4870 prices went down to $199 within few weeks of Nvidia release (IIRC).

Sigh... I guess you don't recall correctly :p

Nvidia Came out first last time around and had to lower prices to match ATI's launch prices of the 4800s (very close to what the MSRP of the 5800 is)... 4870s were not that low until well after the 4890 came out (i.e. last summer)
