they better drop... a good 8800GT with an aftermarket cooler can be had for 198 or 190 after MIR (different deals).

And the 9600GT comes out soon and supposedly beats the 3870 in most tests and is set to cost 150$

I'm so anxious to see some benches from the 9000 series!
EDIT: The other 9000 series benches, not the 9600gt. :p BTW, I'm really glad the prices are dropping on the 3870's. I've been wanting a second one since I built up my machine. Perfect timing. :)

same... People are saying how FAST it is for a x600 card... i hope it ISN'T an abnormally fast x600... but that instead, the 9 series is just THAT GOOD... and that the 9800GTX will be 50% faster or so... :)

That will be a worthwhile upgrade!

And Best Buy has it for $260...

And it always takes like 6 months for nvidia cards to actual go down to their "retail" prices.

I thought 9600gt is supposed to be $179 and up.

50% would be very disappointing after almost 2 years

Since the FX/9700 series every new card has doubled performance, even just refreshes ( FX 5900 > 6800 GT > 7800 GTX > 8800 GTX all doubled)

So Id expect no less... Or are we reaching diminishing returns already?

I don't see why the price of the 3870X2 would drop, ATI's flagship and currently the best single card solution, no reason for a kickass midrange (although overpriced like hell right now) should lower the price on something in the high-end range.

Well from the pure hardware aspects the 9800 GTX is going to have twice or more of what the 8800 Ultra had, not sure if the performance we get out of it will be doubled but the potential sure is.

To take some wind from Nvidia's sails when the GF9 series fully launches.

nooo... thats evil business practices and only nvidia does that![/sarcasm]

I remember how so many people cried foul when nvidia released the 8800GT saying its unfair that they are releasing an unfinished geforce 9 early to simply take the wind out of AMD's 38XX release...

AMD called us to announce new prices for the Radeon HD 3850 512 MB and HD 3870. In the USA tonight (and everywhere else soon after), e-tailer prices for the HD 3870 should drop from $245 to $189; The price of the HD 3850 512 MB should drop from $199 to $169.

i think this can be considered good news

AMD is competitive again .. now let's see them do this with CPUs :p

Could this mean that something new is coming in the graphics world?
Stay tuned.

well, duh ...

Judging by the looks of it, nvidia's 9 series is pretty much G9x... the 9800GX2 will be the flagship card and since that's pretty much dual 8800GTS (G92) we can assume the 9800GTX will be nothing more than a slightly tweaked (maybe more memory, that AA bug fixed, higher clocks) and tri-sli capable 8800GTS (G92) and the 9800GT will probably be a slightly tweaked 8800GT (just minor tweaks and possibly higher clocks) and MAYBE tri-sli.

It doesn't make sense for the 9800GTX to be faster than the 9800GX2... so yeah, don't expect any miracles, that rumor about the 9800 being rebadged G92 seems pretty plausible.

Still nothing wrong with that, they are still excellent cards for gaming (Crysis and CoJ are the only games that bring them to their knees) and with some tweaks and some driver optimizations they should be even better cards, Tri-SLI 9800GTX's and Quad SLI 9800GX2's will always be there for the performance-hungry enthusiast. With the eventual price drop and driver optimizations, SLI configurations will be come the new gen and with this very same G92 cores we'll be getting a big boost in performance.

Everyone who bought a 8800GTX in 2006 should be extremely happy, that card will last a pretty long time still.

The 9800 GTX isn't just a tweaked 8800 GTS, the 9800X2 is 2 GTs or GTSs depending on who you want to talk to (either on par with GT or a slightly underclocked GTS), the card is going to be nice and pricey and then the retailers are going to gouge us even more but the card is far more than a tweaked GTS. And anyways the 9800X2 is flopping like the 7950X2 did, so the single card single gpu solution with the 9800 GTX is.

Now on to SLI, I doubt it'll be around for much longer, why? Because Intel has their own discrete graphics cards and will eventually catch up to nVidia and ATI levels and they don't have to worry about R&D funds sicne they're loaded. AMD has ATI to work with, only company left without cpu and gpu is nVidia and they will slowly die out of the market, unless they can make single slot cards that can outperform multiple GPUs from their competitors.

does this mean all the currently in stock 3800's need to be sold out at places like newegg before the lowered prices are seen ?

come on... daamit has had one good release in 3 years and you're assuming that they're going to be 3 months ahead of nvidia??? This price cut is in direct response to 9600gt, it has zero to do with r700. Don't get me wrong, I hope that they do come out really early and so does nvidia, I just don't think either one of them is even close to ready yet.
