ATI HD 3870 and upconverting SD DVD

I'm using a ATI HD 3870 in my main PC, connected via HDMI. I'm wondering about the best way to upconvert standard definition DVDs played on the PC going out to my Westinghouse 37" 1080P monitor. I see some say that WMP does do some upconversion, and ATI does some within the video card. What's the truth here?
Thanks

ATI's AVIVO does indeed do some upconverting:

I have an HD3850, and I do notice that all my videos, including DVDs, do look different than they did on my previous computer. And I am using the same monitor. The biggest change that I'd notice is that fairly-low resolution videos seem to be smoothed out such that the pixelation is gone. And I rewatched my LOTR Trilogy and I seemed to notice more detail on screen, but I haven't done a side by side comparison yet.

I use the FREE VLC player for all my video needs and it upconverts as well. I have a pc made in every room almost through my home just for watching movies on it using that program. I will never use a standard dvd standalone ever again.
