ATi HD 2900 XTX - what's the scoop

Is it true that ATi has an OEM/SI only version of the HD 2900, aka XTX, aka Dragonhead 2, that beats the GeForce 8800 Ultra? I've been hearing more about this and want to know when the cards would be available to the rest of us without having to buy a pre-built.

I think they scrapped the "XTX" card, but Diamond Multimedia has come out with an HD2900XT 1GB card with higher clocks and GDDR4, which is pretty similar the original OEM XTX model minus the oversized cooling solution.

Dailytech article about the "return" of the the XTX:

benchmarks from a forum member that has one (thanks n7):

article and benchmarks from gotfrag.com:

edit: ...and no, it doesn't beat the 8800 Ultra. It's a bit faster then the X2900XT 512MB though.

You shouldn't even look at those benchmarks; they're absolute crap. Unfortunately, no respectable site has benchmarked the HD 2900XT 1GB.

That's not the XTX, however; that's just a 1GB version of the HD 2900XT with higher memory clocks. It's not an officially released part; whether or not ATI will officially release a "HD 2900XTX" in the future is not known. The HD 2900XT 1GB is just a part that some vendors have made available by sticking 1GB of GDDR4 on an HD 2900XT card.

What? "Those benchmarks are absolute crap" is a broad statement. Please clarify why you think they are crap. Otherwise such posts should be ignored.

You might also notice the hodgepodge of cards and drivers that were used in this test. This is the result of the full extent of this test being spread out over a period of about two months

Need I say any more.

They also don't specify what an "HD 2900XTX" is... I'm assuming it's clocked 750/2020, because that's what the Dailytech sample back in April was clocked at. Overall, a non-hardware site with the worst testing practices I have ever seen should not be trusted.

n7 did a test with the latest drivers and compared an 8800GTX @ 595/1800 and an HD 2900XT 1GB @ 825/2100 : http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2065772&enterthread=y

Basically, the HD 2900XT 1GB is slightly slower (overall) than the GTX, sometimes faster, usually pretty close.
