Ati for xbox2, what does that mean?

Hey everyone,

I found out a while ago about xbox2 signing on ati, but I was unable to sign in and start a thread on it so all you wonderful and intelligent folks (and you idiots too) could just kind of give me your take on this, and maybe even the effect it should have on xbox2, and ati...

It means that they will spend resources on it that could have been spending on their desktop parts

It means they will use the technology they will use for the PC (R500, ie: 2 generations time), and release a product for the PC based on the R500, and an adapted product based on the R500 for the XBox2.

Sure, some of their resources will go towards adapting it, but the basis of the chip will be designed and used in the PC as well, so not all that much will be lost, and they'll have more resources anyway due to the $$$ they'll get from the XBox 2.

LOL Wow, you're really going out on a limb there nmtsev. You really think a console system that comes out years and years later than it's predecessor will be better? I thought they would take a step back!

You can, we can put Rage 128s and K6s in it. We can sell the consoles for $300 and make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I like the idea myself. Xbox got us NForce and soundstorm and good competition for PS2, and it won't hurt the development of their chipsets and embedded solutions either. Perhaps a good way to keep or attract some good talent and investors. I'd say another win for ATI.

Its great news, now I don't have to worry about being nuked by nVidia when I get the XBOX2.
