I was thinking of getting the ATI 9700 PRO for my new system, I know the driver support used to be lame, but I heard it was good now. Then I went to the computer store yesturday, and the tech told me that ATI driver support still sucks, Nvidia is a lot better. Is this true or not?

I just built a couple of game systems with ATI cards. The drivers seem much improved from the older days.

I'd go with tenoc :

COmputer Store Guys are morans (in general).... Even worse most computer store guys are campy about hardware so they will put down other hardware to increase sales of their favorite hardware... The best is to be an informed consumer and dont ask for advice from some guy in a store...

BTW the driver support is much better and ATI is commmitted to releasing a certian number of driver releases per yer (kinda like 3DFX of old) and they have ppl that scour the 3dRaqge forums to pick up on problems.... Wicked-cool if you ask me....

I had a feeling the computer store dude was a moron, I just wanted to double check since I haven't tried ATI yet.
Thanks for the advice.

As a long time ATI user, their driver support has improved quite a bit, hope this helps :)

As a user who converted from Nvidia to ATI, their drivers are almost as good as Nvidias with some issues left to solve.

ATI can eat my ass. Their drivers are the worst thing in the world next to the bubonic plague. I've never had such a bad driver problem. This even tops my 3dfx problems with third-party drivers. NVidia and ATI aren't that great of companies but nVidia is probably the better of the two. Long live 3dfx.

ATi's drivers are very good at this point. I don't know why people think that NVIDIA's driver have 0 problems and ATi's have a few, so they must be terrible. No drivers are perfect. There will always be problems. ATi is EXTREMELY committed to fixing them. NVIDIA isn't even as determined as ATi to squash the bugs in their drivers. Don't worry about potential problems, the possibility of suffering from problems is not much worse going with ATi than with NVIDIA. On that note, I still say NVIDIA has the best drivers in the industry, but ATi's are nothing to worry about.

One example: The tv wonder which is their only stand alone cards has a ton of issues with XP. XP has been out for how long? And how long has the tv wonder been out?

Anyway regarding just video card drivers, they have improved and are alot better when compared to other companies that make pc products however they still don't compare to nvidia's driver own team.

But no matter what, just like everyone else has pointed out, never listen to the salesman they just don't know crap!

The R9700 and R8500 drivers are great for me, I've had trouble with the radeon 7000 series lately though, mostly just with really recent games.

Your problems seem to be with the motherboard from what you told me.

The tech may have been wrong in saying ATI sucks, but he was accurate in saying Nvidia's drivers are still better. About taking drivers seriously, IIRC Nvidia was the first company to give their drivers a unified architecture and a NAME coinciding with a public launch. Now everyone's doing it......

Probably an insult. You have to put yourself in my shoes: just buy a new computer with a great motherboard and supposedly the best video card on the market to find that you only get 40 frames in UT2k3 w/ everything on normal and ATI won't help me or even tell me that there is a known conflict with my motherboard. I'm a little pissed off and I feel like throwing this computer out the window at times.

You did do a little research of your own and visit sites like Rage3d.com?

ATi's drivers are excellent - not quite as good as nVidia's but almost. There are a few issues left but each driver release is decreasing the amount.
