i got my asus 4870 x2 back up and running and trying to trifire it with my asus 4870 black knight. the two drivers i tried will load but the vc's don't recognize them ( 9.12 & 10.6) what's the deal? they're the same gd gpu's for pete's sake!

pissed off.

edit: ditched the X2 and reinstalled the XFX w/10.6 and all's golden. maybe a couple thousand pts. short in that "synthetic benchmark" but in gaming, what's the difference to the eye between 150 & 300 fps?

Its not your problem, its the AMD/ATI intern driver team that does this.

This is why after my x800 xt pe I tol dmyself NEVER EVER again I will go with ATI ,, only gang green.

Their drivers and Catalyst are horrible buggy,, you wouldnt have this problem if you went the other way. gl

Tweakboy stop talking out of your ass.

Both companies have had their ups and down with drivers and calling one of them an intern team is just disrespectful.

Here we go again. :'(

I'd advise trying the latest drivers. If that doesn't work try 10.3 just to see if they do. That was a really good release. If neither 10.3 or 10.10 (there's some hotfix b, c, d drivers too) work, I'd be inclined to think you might have some other issue. Maybe not a clean uninstall/install of the drivers, or something?

AMD drivers can be really ridiculous. For example, I always get a black screen when I uninstall my old drivers for my 4850. The computer is still on, and monitor is still on, I just can't see anything. I always* have to boot into safe mode, run driver sweeper, reboot and install the new drivers. I don't know why they can't make a simple uninstall package work correctly, but it seems that they can't. Maybe the PEBKAC, but I've never had a problem uninstalling/installing new drivers before (when I had an NV card).

It also could be that I have Vista as my main OS on the machine too. When I was with NV I used XP. All I know is that I click uninstall, wait a few minutes while it does it's thing, then bam! No screen. 🙂

Why do you even uninstall the old drivers? I just download the new ones and let them do their stuff. Been working for 2 years now.

This.

I rarely ever have driver issues with either side, and I've gone through a lot of NV and AMD/ATI cards over the years.

One bad experience with one card hardly justifies calling an entire company's product line or product history crap. I have multiple cards from both sides of the fence, and I can say from my personal experiences that neither company is perfect when it comes to bugs. AMD tends to release drivers that are initially buggier, but are also quicker to release fixes and newer drives that address previous problems. Nvidia tends to have better drivers from the get-go, but their driver releases often lag behind AMD, so if you are one of the few people that has a problem with the current driver, you'll be stuck waiting for quite some time.

Limiting yourself to just one company these days is silly. Any graphics card is going to get the job done, provided you're willing to look for solutions if you do run into a minor problem. If there are any major problems, simply return it. Unless you're building some kind of system-critical computer that MUST NOT hiccup, it's just stupid to jump on the "I only buy XXXXX!" bandwagon.

Hmmm, I thought that uninstalling was necessary. It's even a step on the help section of the website.

Anyways, maybe I'll give this a try next time. Thanks for the tip!

Please stop trolling. nv drivers aren't perfect either -- remember the nv drivers with a fan control bug that fried cards? Or the scaling control UI bugs described in this current thread:
