ATI drivers not installing....

I am setting up a machine for my wife. Everything is running fine, but I went to install the readeon drivers and installation fails saying I need to try again with adapter set to Standard VGA. Well, when I go into Display Properties there is no option to make the change.

The current display adapter does not show, but when I go into advanced I find:

Service Name: VgaSave
Display name: VGA Display Controller

Going into Device Manager I don't find a Display Controller. 😕

There is no option to change the display adapter, nor one to delete the existing one. I even tried Add Hardware from Control Panel and can't get it to work.

Any ideas?

I looked in Google groups and found the exact issue mentioned by a few others. It seems to happen with a repair installation.

I tried a few things like replacing the Radeon 9600XT withan old PCI version of the Mach64. The display controller did show up in Device Manager, but was gone when I switched back to the 9600XT.

So, I reformatted and reinstalled Windows. All is fine now. But, what a PAIN!!!
