ATI driver support SUCKS !!!

I ran into so serious issues with a 9800np bb ATI card. I worked fine until I ran Microsoft updates. One of them involved directX drivers. After reboot the card came up with errors every time i ran CastleW.

If this is an issue with xp, ati needs to #$%'ing fix it. By god thats what the cards designed to run on. Or at least warn everyone with a flyer in the box to "DO NOT UPDATE XP DRIVERS!!!"

I returned the card to circuitcity, cause after 4 days i said $%$# IT! and I'll wait for the cards to be able to comfortably play HALO, HL2, DIII. Looks like after d3 hits everyones going to be in for a RUDE awakening. Including all with 9800 that will start to lock up and freeze like a P1 133 /64mb trying to play Quake.

I'll wait for john c's lead. He's backing nvidia ... I'll save my rent money for .. . um, rent.

Don't take the drivers from MS. They are older than the Catalyst drivers. Always use the releases from ATI directly.

DO NOT UPDATE XP DRIVERS
Shouldn't the title be "Dont use Windows Update drivers"?
Most people know that anyway.

True, as is often the case, the problem lies between the chair and the keyboard

Duh! Yet another screwed up system due to "Windows Update". Why don't you just flash to some beta BIOS in Windows while you're at it, hmm?

I have a friend that loaded Windows update driver for his Logitec keyboard and mouse. It made the mouse AND keyboard completely non functional! Ever try to fix a driver problem without a working keyboard or mouse? YOU CANT! Safe mode, nothing worked. Had to reload the OS. :|

Windows Update keeps wanting me to take an older driver pack for my card and John C. Dvorak has a column questioning what all the XP patches may be doing to the OSes stability.

Well, I can understand his frustration as I've had at least some issues (mostly minor) with virtually every ATI driver release myself, and ATI's support is nearly non-existant. Its not so easy to diagnose what the problem might be since the Cat driver installations are almost trivial now with a decent install package and drivercleaner, so if you DO have problems.......
However, at worst I've always been a driver install away from a fully functioning card and I think you could have got that card to work flawless in your rig with a little help here.

Hmmm, I've never had a problem with ATIs drivers
Not everyone uses every feature of ATI cards, nor does everyone have the same components, so maybe you wouldn't notice, or they don't affect your setup. Most are minor issues or affect a smaller user group, but there are issues.
Just off the top of my head:
*Try using interlaced resolutions with Cat 3.7's without a virtual desktop or with tiling enabled.
*Rage Theater audio driver has a conflict with Cakewalk WDM drivers in every version including Cat 3.7.
*MPEG-1 playback is fubured using VMR with Cat .7. You have to disable VMR for proper playback.

And you are blaming Ati for this? Did you do a proper removal of the Ati drivers before you did this? Or just overwrite your Ati drivers with the ones from MS?

NO? sounds like a user error to me.

I have to agree it`s Microsoft`s driver updates that cause the problems,I remember when I was new to XP few years back and let it install Epson printer drivers, well my Epson printer stopped working and was printing garbage,so be careful if you use Windows update for drivers.Bottom line it`s always best to get the drivers from the manufacturers homepage "better safe then sorry" 😉.

The only time I've ever had a problem with the ATI cat drivers is when I was over clocked too high or not giving enough voltage to the CPU or memory.

I suspect your problem is being caused by a loose nut on your keyboard.

ATI drivers sucked until they made unified drivers. Since they released drivers that work on all Radeon models, I've only had a problem with them mysteriously reverting back to the Windows drivers. Had to reinstalled the drivers a few times because of XP doing that on me. It would change the drivers back just because I shut the computer off sometimes. I wouldn't even run windows update or anything and it would still do it

LMAO... yeah... and Apple says the G5 is the fastest home computer in the world

Apple also said they had the first PC with a 64-bit processor. On April 22, 2003, AMD introduced the Opteron; a full 2 months earlier than Apple released the G5.
