ATi Driver 7.7 - Can't Install In Safe Mode

I uninstalled my current driver 7.6 and it told me to restart. Upon entering Windows after restart, 5 seconds in when it said "Found New Hardware" for my graphics card, I got a blue screen of death. Then I got my computer booted in Safe Mode. I tried both Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking (I have my computer plugged into a router which goes into my comcast modem).

Both times I tried to install the ATi driver I had downloaded on my desktop and it went through the whole thing and said "Could not detect hardware for this driver. Setup is now closing." or something along those lines.

Why would this be?

I also had the option to login under "Administrator" instead of my normal "Mike" but nothing was on the desktop for that profile. I also can not get on the internet for some reason. The connection is fine, but I cannot connect to the internet while in Safe Mode.

ATi driver 7.7 is what is on my desktop and I uninstalled 7.6. Any ideas?

i know the new catalyst sets need the windows installer service running to install properly, but you should be able to start the installer and it would extract the all the setup files to the ATI folder under C:\ and in device manager just do a manual driver update by selecting the video controller and select re-install/upgrade driver and point it to the driver folder under c:\ati

the other option is to boot into safe mode with network and go to ati's site and download the driver only version, install it and then install the full pack after it boots into normal mode

I booted into Safe Mode with Networking and the internet did not work. The connection is working fine though.

Also, I don't think it creates a C:\ATi folder because when it gets to the end of the setup it just closes.

if you have another (ati) card, you can try putting that card and install drivers, then switch vid card. Kind of like jump-starting.

What happens if you boot up and have Windows install the base VGA drivers (no ATI)? Then run something like drivercleaner to make sure there are no other driver remnants in the system. Download another copy of 7.7 and try an install if all the other pieces work.

I just went from 7.6 to 7.7 with no issues so that's my only guess.

True.

You have to boot windows into normal mode.
You cant install cos Windows Installer wont run in safe mode -- also why you cant uninstall programs in safe mode.

BTW, Microsoft needs a way to address this. If you install something that causes instability, it seems logical that safe mode would be the best way to uninstall the ah heck

Hit WIN+R, type "msconfig" without quotes, and select OK.

I haven't tested this in safe mode, but if this works, you may be able to disable whatever's crashing.

Boot in safe mode.
Use msconfig to disable all non-MS services (there's a checkbox to hide all MS services - click it, then disable everything else) and all startup programs.
Reboot

Does that fix the issue?

7.7's arent even worth the trouble.

Are you getting blue screens everytime you boot into windows normally? Or did it just happen that one time?

You need to boot into windows normally to install your driver.

Are you on XP or Vista?
