ATI CrossFire in action

So, I went out to Monarch Computer yesterday after work to see what they had going on for the tax free promotion, and I got to check out CrossFire in action. The ATI rep was really nice... They had actually shut down the generator for the trailer the CrossFire rig was in, but fired it back up for a few curious folks. They showed off a bit of HL2 and FarCry running very, very smoothly. I think FarCry was running close to 140 FPS. The resoltution was a bit odd, since they were running the demo on a huge plasma display and not a computer monitor. I think it was 1366 x 768, so it wasn't all that high res. They didn't appear to have a whole lot of AA (or any at all), but it's hard to tell on such a big (relatively low res) screen up close.

The system was running quite smoothly, and the demos were running well also. The rep indicated that the system was running an FX-55, he also indicated that Asus would be the first to market with their Intel based CrossFire motherboards, and that MSI was going to be leading the pack with the AMD CrossFire platform. I forgot to ask him what SB the motherboard had in it, so I'm not sure if it was ULI or ATI. (kicked myself for that one on the drive home)

Anyway, it was pretty cool and definitely worth checking out if you live in ATL, GA. The ATI guys were cool, and they definitely had a better presence than nVidia/eVGA, although eVGA did have a sweet SLI rig set up in one of the rooms. nVidia weren't scheduled to be presenting on Thurs, so that might be why they didn't have their reps out on force like ATI and Connect3D.

...after talking to the rep from ATI and him firing up the generator for us to check out CrossFire, I almost felt bad picking up my second eVGA 7800GTX right after that, but hey, tax free is tax free and Monarch isn't exactly close to where I live so I won't be making another trip.

Yeah, interestingly enough, he didn't say anything about DFI. Kinda odd now that you mention it. DFI was the only mobo manufacturer with a display aside from Intel, and many of Monarch's own displays were running DFI motherboards.

Somehow I'm not thinking the R520 debuts in a Monarch trailer, but who knows?

You would be correct. They didn't even mention R520. Although, apparently, this is one of the first public displays of CrossFire in the US.

Interesting, MSI was going to be my choice for an S939 upgrade last month but I rejected the entire upgrade thing for a while longer.

Wonder how overclockable the Crossfire mobos are.
