ATI Crossfire: almost 2X performance gain?

In doom3: Frame rate jumped from 36 to 69 at highest settings!

WOW.. If crossfire does ~2X performance gains it would ROCK!

You left out the decimals, 69.7 and 36.9; that's an 88.6% increase which is definatly good (I've no idea what SLI gives). Though I'm almost sure the point of that article is that crossfire is usable without the master card! That's what the whole "cracked" thing is about. Look at the hardware they're using. Run it through babelfish and you'll see what I'm talking about (use Chinese-trad)

Assuming the translation is correct it looks like they flashed an ordinary x850XT with a Crossfire BIOS. Basicly it worked but with some hitches. Read the "roughly translated" article if you're interested.

If 88% is good for the next R520... WOW 18K 3dmark05 would not be bad at all. Imagine the game developers can start coding games that will be amazing in just 2 years!

Yup thats about right. The ordinary X850XT cards are flashed to crossfire bios and it worked cept for some hitches with a REAL crossfire card can do.

What does that and Santa Clause have in common?
At least at X-mas you can see santa even if he isnt real.

I wish it were here but no matter what it scores unless you can buy it then it doesnt exist.

Wonder if you'll say 0%

Don't get angry. Southpawuni is a total fannut. So he's radical. But he is right.

Of the following 4 items, which does not belong.

R520
XBox360
PS3
G70

Not looking for a cutsie answer here either. 😉

I guess you mean ps3, as it will not be for release until 2006?

i still don't understand crossfire. if i had an x800 xl and paired it with a crossfire edition x800 pro (or a crossfire edition xl), then both cards will only use 12 pipes. so if you buy an xl and pair it with an r520, would the r520 run with only 16 pipes?

I've a question: Is there any reason Crossfire can't work on non-ATi chipsets? I'm planning on ordering nVidia SLI motherboard soon, but with an X800 XL, but I also plan on upgrading the video card in ~2 years time (my 9500 Pro is over 2 years, yeah, baby, yeah), but since I can't predict whether ATi or nVidia will have better offerings then, but I can predict which has the better chipset, I'd like to know if the motherboard would support Crossfire AND SLI ! Imagine that. (There's 4 buts in that sentence, I am so, so sorry everyone)

Just found this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=31&threadid=1603479&enterthread=y
I suppose it should work. I hope it does. DFI LanParty UT SLI-DR HERE WE COME!

AFAIK, the only Crossfire master cards are 16-pipes: the XL and the XT. So, only the master card will run slower.

You will not be able to pair cards from different generations, as that just gets silly complicated with different feature sets and architectural quirks. We haven't seen SLI in any form across generations yet, and that'll continue to be the case. R5xx with R5xx, and R4xx with R4xx.

Finally, I still believe R520 will be 16 pipes. I don't think we'll see 32 pipes this year. Well, we don't even have 24 conventional pipes in G70, as it has only 16 ROPs. But I believe that 24 fragment pipes is as far as the IHVs will go for a while.
