ATI CCC slow to start?

Hi everyone, newbie to anandtech but I've been lurking from time to time. I recently bought a XT850 XT (AGP still) and installed Catalyst 5.10 with CCC. Everything seems to be working fine except it takes almost a minute for CCC to open up after clicking the icon on the bar. In the meantime, ZoneAlarm firewall shows that there's a bunch of activity. What is going on here? Why does CCC need to get online everytime and is it necessary? I'd like to check my temps after playing, etc, but by the time the panel opens up the temp has dropped several degrees. Thanks for the help!

Something is wrong. When I had my X850 it took no more than 5 seconds to start. Too many programs in your taskbar?

Also, you can right click the ATi icon, and make changes, or do most anything, without having to start it. I dont recall if you can check the temp without loading CCC or not.

Also you cannot check the temps after you get done playing. Temps drop in a matter of seconds. The only real way to do this is to monitor and log the temps while playing. I believe ATi tool can do this. Its also a very nice little program.

Hmm, never thought about leaving the panel open while I play, good idea.

I don't have that many programs on the taskbar, just the usual stuff. CCC takes longest by far to open up. I'm guessing that it has to do with .NET. Maybe I should try it without the CC, just the Control Panel.

CCC does take a rediculusly long time to load.
Hell it takes longer than photoshop!

Dont get me wrong, I like CCC but really, I dont understand why it takes so long.

because its a bloated resource hog....i really never liked it and always use the CATS without the CCC, and for options and tweaking and overtclocking and everything you could even imagine use ati tray tools. CCC blows.

I do the same - I hate bloatware and avoid any software written with some n00b framework instead of compiled into native win32 code.

Any ideas on how to make it "start" faster?
Get rid of it and replace it with ATi Tray Tools. ATi's CCC engineers need to take some serious lessons from Ray Adams on how to design an elegant control panel with a minimal footprint. CCC is bloated garbage compared to ATT.
