The inquirer, for god sake man, this site is known for it's gossip.

The X800 performs as well as the NV40. Some games better, some games wors, so what.

This guy is just rambling on and on. I dont think I would trust him by the sheer fact that he spells "same" and "samr" and "knew" as "new". Sure typos are quite common, but any other formal site never makes typos such as Anandtech, Firing Squad, gamespot etc... That article is just absolute garbage.

Another display of fanboyism.

When will it end?

Let me find that Voodoo5 somewhere and put it in a glass box :)

yet it makes some points . .. ati IS losing their performance crown. . . . they FAILED to deliver even what they promised . . . they are screwing their own customers and partners . . . their marketing campaign is a mess. . . .

"I know where my money will be going, and an X800 seems like money badly spent if you don't plan on buying an new card every three months. "

So, by reading that article, you fully agree that buying an x800 (pro/xt) will call for an upgrade in 3 months? Think about it really hard.

You know what, I think he is right. The X800 XTPE ONLY gets 60FPS @ 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF in Farcry SM3.0? Not sure about you, but I think that is REALLY BAD. 60FPS is almost unplayable. 3 months? I cant wait 3 months, I need to upgrade NOW because my x800 is a POS!

The only thing I find bad with ATI is their ignorance to OGL tweaking. They could have started before D3 was released. Otherwise, I like their drivers and I like their technologies. Especially the Adaptive Trilinear. And that they felt that the increase in price wasn't worth the increase in performance to add SM3.

Both companies are incapable of holding my trust, since it's never clear exactly what they say and why they say it. I just look for the best product within a nice price range. Right now, the GT is looking mighty fancy.

You are 100% right about the "trust" issue . . . neither ati nor nvidia is deserving of our trust . . . :p

;)

ati HAD crappy drivers and a piss-poor performance product until the Rage chipset . . . nVidia was the one to chose for 'performance' and ati for IQ - ati had some DISasters (remember the MAXX that their programmers could NEVER make a good Win2k driver for) . . . then the 8500 made a very serious attempt at performance but was held back by CRAP drivers (and shut down bty the GF4) . .. it is only the LAST TWO years that ati has had a 'compelling' product - the r300 . . . and they have COASTED on that success ever since . . . nVidia, OTOH, has been quite productive in that same two years and it SHOWS. :p

I'm impartial when buying video cards, I just want to get whatever card is better in its class, like when I got my 5700u, I just based that on the slight lead it had when overclocked. To be honest, I was really close to getting a 9600XT. But I am almost 100% sure i'll be getting an nVidia card again, because I dislike the fact that ATI downplays all of nVidias new features. PS3, SLI, all "not needed" according to ATI. But i'll be curious to see how well PS3 performs with newer games ;) I hope ATI does something more drastic than a core revision, and adding some pipelines next time around.

If you boil all of it down, in essence, he is just complaining about how Nvidia has a nice new core, with new features, this generation, while ATI is just doing the same thing as last generation with higher clocks/more pipes. Oh, and he is complaining about how ATI is handling this issue almost entirely with marketing.

I don't agree with every thing he said, but I do think ATI has been using empty marketdroid speech quite a bit the past 6 months.

exactly, and ATI is touting this around like they have some ground-breaking technology here, when in reality, all it is is last seasons best, with ramped up clockspeeds, and more pipelines. I can't believe I was about to get an X800 Pro.

It is a biased article, but I think it makes a lot of sense. I think Nvidia has obviously won this round. Between even performance with better features, the simple fact of SLI being available, and most importantly, the fact that Nvidia is actually shipping cards, they've come out on top in this match. If the mid-range 6600 and 6600GTs perform as well as Nvidia says, then they're going to walk all over the X600 series. And then there's Nvidia's driver stability, which to me is still superior. ATi is looking less and less attractive these days. If Nvidia capitalizes like this again when NV50 vs r500 rolls out, ATi could have serious marketing image problems. Don't get me wrong - they won't be in financial trouble or in danger of going out of business - neither Nvidia or ATi is or will be anywhere near in danger of that - but the high end will start to treat ATi like...well, like we treated them pre-9700 Pro. Why bother?

Anyway, Since R300, ATi has won one release and one refresh, and Nvidia one release. This fall the score card will probably be dropped dead even, and we'll see what happens from there. It should be an interesting ride.

For all our sakes, I hope ATi and NV stay competitive. That means the best options and pricing for all of us, the consumer.

it's another 9800xt . . . on steroids ;)

imo, ati has been "coasting" on it's r300 success for two years . . .

ati BETTER have something "magic" with r500 . . . if they doN'T or if they don't enable sli they will be "runner-up" for the next TWO years (until r600); the same position nVidia was in for the LAST 2 years.
(maybe it has to do with the "curse" of making a GPU for the M$' x-box) :p

ATi should just pull out of the graphics business and cut their losses. They have no cards that can even play games. Maybe Matrox can challenge the newly omnipresent Nvidia. Ati should just stick with the crappy shuttle mobos.

After I clicked on the link and see The Inquirer page loaded up, I closed the browser and stop reading this thread. So forgive me if I ignore everyone's comments.

anyone who appreciates gaming as a hobby would do well to support ALL companies in the industry. Obviously, that guy owns some nVidia stock...:disgust:
