ATI catalyst 8.3: Fixed aspect scaling survey

ATI's latest drivers support aspect ratio scaling. However, it doesn't seem clear to me which cards do or do not support it. I did not have the aspect ratio scaling option when I tested it with my x800 this morning. But I could get a couple of rather strange resolutions to work as expected with the use centered timings option, although most did not. however, I have read reports of it working with a 1800gto, 2900 and 3800 series cards. My monitor setup is sort of bizarre, so it might be a bit of a fluke.

I read a forum post over on rage3d forums where some one indicated this option is only available for the x1xxx cards and newer. Not sure why exactly, seems like it would have to be just a marketing/QA time decision. That would explain why the "GPU scaling" checkbox isn't available for me. Its still strange that a handful of centered timing resolutions output as expected...unfortunately, common ones like 640x480, 8x6 and 1024x768, etc are no goes. I'd hold my breath that x8xx series cards would be supported in the next release, but I'm sure I would pass out.

The annoying thing is I remember selling my x1900xt partially because of the lack of scaling options. I upgraded to a 8800gts 640mb only to find out that the scaling in the drivers was broken. When they finally 'fixed' it, nvidia's implementation didn't work with my viewsonic monitor...although it did for most people. I found one report on another forum from a guy with my same monitor and a 3870 who got it working. But now I have to buy another video card again! At least it seems like ATI, while taking their sweet time with this, might have a more robust implementation then nvidia. Just wish they would extend it to all cards...wonder if its possible to rig the drivers to do so.

DVI is not required but rather digital which encompasses DVI-D and DVI-I (but not DVI-A), and HDMI, DP, P&D, &c.

With a 2600, Maintain Aspect Ratio happily works but Use Centered Timings does not. It seems there is some difference as that option can produce corruption on my secondary display at certain resolutions however the overall result -particularly on my primary, is that it remains dependent upon how the display was "arbitrarily designed" to handle various resolutions (given that no user options were included).

Well, I gotta post my own results. Haven't played with it a lot, just proved it worked. I had zero luck with any nvidia driver combination with this monitor.

x1900xt 512mb, Viewsonic VX2235WM
Only have tested fixed aspect ratio scaling, all worked
840x480 (not entirely sure this was the exact resolution, but displayed correct with black bars on top and bottom)
1152x864
1024x768
640x480

I yanked it out after that to install a better cooler.
