ATI Catalyst 4.4 instillation problem *please help*

I am installing the ATI catalyst 4.4 drivers and I get a severe error which states:
"Setup was unable to complete the instillation.
Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup"
Not sure what to do next.

running 8500 pro on XP

Thanks!

Uninstall the old driver with add/remove then try installing it again. If that fails, try one of the numerous driver cleaners. Like your error message says, you can also force your video card to standard vga. You go into the properties of the video card and update the driver to standard VGA.

ATI drivers suck. You gotta uninstall the driver and before you reboot your computer install the old driver. That should work and if not restore your computer back before the driver.

Best way to upgrade ATi drivers is to remove old ones first via Control panel "add/remove programs icon".

You should download and install Driver Cleaner, follow the instructions in the readme file.

I second the "remove old drivers". ATI is quite clear about this (RTNM), and it has been getting worse over time.
