That's why I switched to NVidia. I was tired of having to update drivers every few weeks, and the control center leaves alot to be desired.

personally, i'd rather have a product that's constantly updating, trying to improve. although it is a pita to update the drivers constantly...

Yes, and if you don't want to update just don't do it.... but at least there's a choice...

They release the 4.11's, find there's an issue with it and Punkbuster games, then release another driver incredibly quickly to fix the issue.
And then people bitch?
Give them a fvcking break!

(Are the 4.12's XP only? - Don't want to work on my Win2k SP4)

DANGER DANGER WILL ROBINSON...

anyway,

4.11 (16xAF)
3dmark05: 1540
Doom3: 39.8

4.12 (16xAF)
3dmark05: 1687
Doom3: 39.9

BUT, 4.12 caused Doom3 to crash during a bench, first time EVER. IMO, they aren't stable. also, you have to install CCC seperately.

oh and I also noticed a setting for WMV acceleration....

These drivers are supposed to increase HL2 performace a lot. Tests from some users show CS:S frames up a lot.

ATi puts out about 1 official driver per month, with a beta every now and then.

NV "leaks" about a driver a week, or more. With an official driver every 4-6 months.

You dont have to update anything. New games come out all the time, and the more official drivers the better.

i like ATI's 1 driver a month thing, and i don't find the updates that annoying because there's always lab rats to do the dirty work for you and if you think the driver is for you after seeing the results, you can change to them.

Only better for HL2, I don't think so:

Doom 3 results:
4.10: 49.5 fps
4.11: 48.4 fps
4.12: 52.5 fps

And that with my Radeon 9800 Pro 256Mb @ XT
ATI, I salute you!

The main improvements seem to be HL2 and 3DM05 (buffers vertices in video card rather than system RAM) speedups and a fix to the Punkbuster hardlocks.

I went from 4.8's to 4.11's (couldn't get the 4.12's installed, Win2k system)
I had no problems with either set (so far with the 4.11's), and the only reason I upgraded was because most benchmarks show the 4.11's being a fair bit faster than the 4.8's.
I like the choice ATi offer, and you don't HAVE to update drivers, unless you are having problems.
And as this release of the 4.12's shows, ATi try and fix problems now, since they seem to have almost rushed this out to solve the Punkbuster issue (even though it's not that rushed).

well, it provided me with 2 tangible benefits so i'm happy:

1. solved PB problem; now I can play CoD:UO on all the PB-enabled servers
2. 5% increase in performance of the CSS "video stress test". i assume this will translate into greater performance for both CSS and HL2. very nice. (104 fps --> 109.5fps)

going to try Doom3 now to see how it is. won't be much concerned if it *does* cause crashing, since I don't play it anymore...

EDIT: Tried Doom3. timedemo seemed to run about 1fps more than before. Ran it several times; no crashing. Anyways gururu, I don't see how you can infer a driver set's stability simply by trying it once... if you had repeatedly run Doom3 and it always crashed in the timedemo, that's a different story.

the 4.12 drivers are halflife2 drivers, if your left wanting after tuesday, use these (much better performance)

There is a thread with people posting 4.12 driver increases in performance at Hard Forums.

These results look sweet. Not too many reported issues either, and some of them sound like AI issues. But some 10 FPS increases in performance for VST. Very impressive if you ask me, looks like ATI + HL2 really is looking like NVidia + Doom3.

yea I know, it just threw me for a loop since the timedemo has never crashed on me before. it was only once though among several runs. I may go back to 4.12 once HL2 is out.

When I run the Counter Strike: Source Stress Test I get Red Error Signs on the rotating objects (glass stuff in the begining).
