*Waits for an nVidia fanboy to talk about how terrible ATi drivers are!*

How long will it take before the "ATi has crappy drivers" argument is no longer valid?
A long time. I still won't buy an ATI card because of it. In fact, I just read an article about how (forgive me for not knowing the specifics, but as I have no intention of buying an ATI card I only read a little of it) either the 9500 or 9500 Pro had drivers that wouldn't work with other cards. Y'know, universal driver architecture means that drivers work on every card universally. Why can't ATI get that straight. Now these new drivers might work with every card for all I know, but there should have never been an issue with that in the first place. Is that a little deal? Of course it is. If I had the card I'd spend the time to make sure that I had the right drivers for it. However, it's those little things that keep people like me wondering just how good ATI is with drivers. I don't think there's a magic number for how long it will take ATI to shake the "bad driver" label, but I can tell you it isn't shaken yet.

Talk to the hand, sir 🙂

You are completely confused. The review you are referring to was using a new driver for the 9500 that hadn't been released yet. It has been now and works on ALL ATI cards so yet another misinformed anti ATI person straightened out....next?

Just a question, how many of you remove the old drivers completely and how many overwrite it?? I did the overwritting and the removal way but both have the same score in 3dmark. Does it really matter?

I remove all ATI references and files from my system and all registry entries.

Just set the minimum refresh rate in your monitor .inf file and you never have to worry about refresh rate fixes.

I wouldn't recommend doing that if you use TV-out (unless 60Hz is where you set it 😉
Thats why I like the rage3d tweaker, you can set refresh rates for individual resolutions. For TV out to work, the resolution for the TV display must be set to 60Hz(for NTSC).

So, umm, any word yet on what this does for 9500 Pro cards? The last driver update made the 9500 Pro faster than the 9700 Pro in certain benchmarks (see Anand's review.) Do the performance improvements apply to 9500 Pro cards as well?

Not an issue as I don't use TV out and RAGE3DTweaker has messed up more systems and performance than you'd ever imagine.

No, its got lots of little buttons to push and stuff to change..so I can imagine🙂. It works good for overclocking and for enabling features like overscan and theater mode, and for enabling resolutions and setting refresh rates without mucking in the registry(which has its share of casualties as well) so it works very good and easy for me, never messed my system up.

These drivers fixed a lot of issues and helped with the stuttering, but it hasn't been eliminated completely. My ti4600 still runs things more smoothly. Hopefully the official release of DX9 and ATI's DX9 drivers will take care of the unresolved issues.

Stuttering and Shading Flickering still not fixed in 2.5. They will be fixed in 2.6. 🙂

For immediate stuttering fixes, use 3d Analyzer.

Man I want an ATi card. Those drivers look great, since they're about 1/2 the size of the nVidia drivers, and on a 56k that's a big thing! I just wish I had enough money for a new card 🙁

Any fixes for the 60hz for OpenGL?

Can I turn ati_npatch on for Counter-Strike without a nasty drop in FPS (on a Radeon 8500, 128 Meg).

I've tried that, doesn't seem to work for me 🙁 Any other sites? ATI and Nvidia should just release a free tool, for us gamers, that fixes this silly Win2k/XP bug that MS won't fix.

The Radeonator has a sibling program called The Locker which does what you need.

Anyway, I am pleased with ATi's latest driver release. It seemed to smooth out my gameplay in Neverwinter Nights quite a bit. Go ATi!
