ATI Catalyst 10.12 driver issues

Hi all,

After upgrading to Catalyst 10.12 a problem begun to show up. When gaming (i only play COD4 in mutiplayer for now) every 10 minutes or so, the screen freezes (while audio still plays), then turns blank for few seconds and resumes normally. Event viewer says that the VGA driver stopped responding but has recovered successfully.

Anyone else has this problem? Is it driver related or the VGA card starts to die?
I haven't tried uninstalling 10.12 and installing 10.11 just to try yet. Curious whether this happens to anyone else.

While I don't really have an opinion on how to make your 10.12 catalyst work, the immediate solution would be to do exactly what you hinted at, obviously. Try 10.11.

yep me and many others have the same problem, it would also happen in the desktop sometimes while doing 2D stuff! 10.12s are buggy as hell and i just went back to 10.10 (the most stable for me), never seen those issues again after doing that.:)

Why did you revert to 10.10 instead od 10.11? Are 10.11 buggy too? I didn't notice any problems with 10.11.

Same here. In fact - multiple crashes on the desktop while running the Firefox 4 beta, and I couldn't even run the Starcraft II demo for more than a couple minutes. Honestly, I just uninstalled both those programs and I haven't had problems since, but there is something wrong with the 10.12 drivers.

Don't worry, you are not the only one OP. I don't have any 2D issues.. but I too had issues with a few games.. especially ME2. As others have said, roll back the drivers.

I definitely will roll back to Default VGA device. Since the 10.12 were the first drivers i installed after a clean Windows reinstall from few days ago. In the previous installation i had 10.11 then i put the 10.12. I tried uninstalling the 10.12 and installing the 10.11 but the problem still persisted. From past experiences i know that you can never really uninstall VGA drivers completely so i reinstalled the whole Windows installation. It looks like i will be reinstalling Windows again. What do you say i put? The 10.10 or 10.11?

OK, reinstalled Windows from scratch. Installed drivers 10.10. Playing COD4 for 60 minutes now, no freaking problem. Frame level appear to go up a bit but noticeable.
I couldn't play for more than 10 minutes with the 10.12 without a freeze.

I checked and the issues seems to be with the CCC(90% of the time CCC is the culprit).

Ahhh damn. I started cheering for nothing. The problem remains.
I get she same problem after hour and a half of playing with 10.10 installed.
I guess the best bet is to obtain another card and test whether the driver will fail with another card too.

Checked everything again:
1. Power supply cable firmly attached.
2. Temps within 70c under load.

Starting to get nervous lol

I am running on 10.12 hotfix and everything is going good so far no problems, I was going to suggest driversweeper but that's a clean system install so it might be a hardware problem.

Which kind of issue did you had? ME2 crashed twice on me the very first two levels with the PRE_LEAK_WOW64 issue which seems that's a memory leakage. I went to msconfig and put the startup selection on normal and the issue went away, odd....

It stuttered a little with the HD 4870 CF with 8x CFAA Edge Detect, but with my current card, I use Supersampling and never goes below 60fps, insane! But all the 3D games identify the card as an HD 4800 series. I think that the Catalyst 10.12 are buggy.

When will people learn ATIAMD can not make, and dont know how to make bug free drivers.

Even their All In Wonder 15 years ago had corrupt driver desktop issues.

For this reas after my x800 I went 8800GT ,,,, and CCC bloatware doesnt help. I will never be with the red ,, Im with the blue and green imo

The exact same thing OP mentioned. The screen Freezes.. but Audio is playing normally, and after a few seconds, I get a black screen and it crashes back to desktop.. spitting out an "Graphics driver stopped responding" or " XXXX game stopped responding and is closing" or in that same vein.

Like I said, its not the drivers.. its the CCC.

evolucion8, did you reinstall the drivers after upgrading your video card?

Are you saying we should install the driver package without CCC included, i.e., from here: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloa...in7-64.aspx#2?

CCC provides from much needed optimizations.. its not required to play games, but I prefer increase in performance. This seems to be the buggiest CCC I have seen.

You can also install different versions of CCC and drivers.. like installing 10.12 display drivers and CCC from 10.11.

Yup. I actually uninstalled the drivers and everything before removing the HD 4870. Try to install the drivers without the CCC and use ATi Tray Tool and let us know how it goes.

10.10e seem to be the best drivers out there for AMD cards ATM , didn't have any issues with 10.12, so i just stuck with it.

In a volatile market like this, those are some bold claims my friend.

i tried with 10.10e and problems show up much sooner now. The system even rebooted after a freeze twice.

Have to try and reinstall windows and try again. Then RMA the card.

I managed to install the new CCC with my HD 6900 series and works like a champ, woo!
