E8400, 4GB of RAM, Windows 7, Sapphire 4870. Fresh install of the OS and latest ATI drivers.

fps_max is at 60. I get a solid 60 fps when there is 3-4 players on the screen. However anything more, such as 6+ players and a smoke grenade makes my fps fluctuate and drop to 30~40. When i look away to a wall or the action eases up, it returns to 60 fps solid.

I'm kind of at a loss as to why my computer can't handle a hl1 engine game. I fiddled around with the CCC tweaks and put it all to performance but it still does not work.

Any ideas? Oh and that npatch 0 and subdiv 0 does not work

Thanks in advance

You should really set the fps_max at 100 and disable V-sync.

Anyway, I use an HD3850 in Vista with the latest drivers and CS plays just fine. It takes a hell of a lot of smoke grenades going off at once before my framerate drops.

Yeah css has some problems. I get dips in the 40's. My 4850 xfire in L4D gets 90+ max settings 8x 16AF with no dips. The problem is CSS!!

I couldnt tell you about 1.6; but ATI cards perform horribly compared to their nvidia counterparts on CSS

4ghz i7 + 4890 = 200-450 fps
2.8ghz q6600 + 8800gt = 300-500 fps

I actually have to turn AA down to 2x to make sure it stays above 120 when scoping down mid dust2

Could be a Graphics Engine issue. Smoke in CS 1.6 has always been a Performance issue.
