ATI card to hold me over

What's the best ATI card currently for gaming like Oblivion and Gothic 3 that will hold me over until DX10 cards have more variety? Thanks in advance.

x1950xtx

what is the rest of your rig like [including current video card]?

and what resolution do you game at?

ummm... a x1950xtx, of course... unless u want to spend less money...

but for the same bux u could get a 8800gts that whacks it... and then get something else when the variety is sufficient for u...

but for some reason i feel that there's more to this thread...

Rig is a C2D 6300, 2gb of ram and a Samsung Spinpoint HDD. As for resolution the highest I have gone is 1024x1280 simply because thats the best my computer could do. I have a 22" monitor that can probably go higher than that I'm sure. I didn't know an 8800gts was that inexpensive. Hmm.

i figure the OP is probably *waiting* for r600 😛

what is your CURRENT videocard?

since your resolutiuon is only 12x10 ... [LCD, right?]

of course there is the x1950xt[no x]

and the x1900xt

and the x1950p

from less than $200 to ~$250 ... all *satisfactory* for Oblivion

and Gothic3 is still reallly buggy 😛

When building my new rig I was looking at

a) Two X1950 pro's in Xfire (figured I'd get one and get another in a month or so but that never works out...)

b) One X1950XTX (ATI's fastest and I was an ATI loyalist for a long time)

c) The 8800GTS (due to the improved IQ, Architecture, and DX10 compatibility)

The XTX and GTS were very close in price and, since I would be spending that much and waiting longer to upgrade, went the Nvidia route. I can't say I'm sorry I made the choice either. While I have had some driver issues this card, for the most part, smokes anything I throw at it at 1600x1200. HL2 (and the other Steam Source engine games), Oblivion, Dark Messiah, Guild Wars, CoD2, SW Battlefront).

The only current issue I have (just noticed last night and probably isn't the vid card) is that in Guildwars, when I try to create a female Ranger, my system crashes hard... weird

Rambling aside the GTS is a kickin' card and that's from a long time (since the Geforce2 days) ATI loyalist...

agreed

brand loyalty is kind of silly ... neither DAAMiT nor nvidia are *loyal* to us ... they are in a business to make money and we should choose the best for our needs.

i don't think the xtx and gts are that close in price anymore and many people chose to buy a x1950xt for ~$200 and o/c it to near xtx levels

if you game at *only* 12x10 - like the OP - the 1950xt will probably play all the games similarly in performance that you play at 16x12 on your gts ... so that is a consideration

and of course DX10 is not an issue for most ... now ...

for me the x1950p is a *perfect choice* until i build my DX10 rig next year as i am pleased to game at 10x7 or 11x8 as long as the details are up.

Yup a terrible time to buy a GPU. Nvidia and ATI are only less than 40 days away before they launch massive strike at each other with new and better GPU.

i think this mostly applies to high end.
