ATI CARD or NVIDIA CARD

okay sooooo i have a question that was probably answered 1000000000 times but here it comes again.......and ATI or nVidia.....which will work better with the AMD x2 3800+ and will someone suggest a nice motherboard for both of these products

both cards will work fine how much $$ do you have?

<200 6600GT
>200 x800GTO2
>300 7800GT
>400 7800GTX
>500 x1800XT

Get a 7800GT ($300), or if you need the extra power a 7800GTX ($450).

Get the ASUS A8N-E or A8N-SLi (depending on if you're planning to stick with only one card or maybe upgrade to SLi later). And especially with Battlefield 2, get at 2 GB of RAM.

7800GT for $300 is a very good card. Everything above seems to cost too much.

Also if you are going to spend more than $500, get 2x7800GTs.

Why did you replace the GTO2 with the GS? An unlocked GTO2 will wipe the floor with the GS

okay basically it is between the nvidia 7800 and the ATI X1800 Xl. i have heard ATI makes better chips..longer lasting more reliable, also what company shoudl i buy the 7800 from if i decide to get it, isnt BFG tech the best nVidia chip maker(or whatever you call them)

Firstly, 3700+ is not X2, it's the Athlon 64 series. Use the A8N-E or A8N-SLi motherboard.

And anyway, I have no reason why nVidia doesn't make their own cards, but basically we've come to think of eVGA, BFG, and XFX as parts of nVidia itself.

Because the gto2 is an Ati card and as such is disqualified from the choices... 😉 You have to pick a slower gs and pretend they're equal.

My own picks are:
<$200: x800gto (will wipe the floor with a 6600gt even if it doesnt unlock)
>$200: x800gto2 (guaranteed unlock and OC's well)
>$300: 7800gt or x1800xl (depending on games/features)
>$400: x1800xt (if you want a gtx, just buy a gt and OC it. It would still be slower than a xt though)
>$500: too much money and not enough sence to use it. Whatever you buy will be obsolete in a month or 2, so just send the money my way...

edit: BTW, I've yet to see a 6800gs break 7000 in 3dmark on air.

For a motherboard I'd suggest the ASUS A8R-MVP, AT showed it to be a great overclocker and its relatively cheap, plus it has far better audio and doesn't have a load NB cooler.

The GTO2 hardly mops the floor with the GS, it all depends on how good of an overclock you get.

Heres a guy that gets a nice overclock with his GS getting a 3dmark05 score of nearly 6000. You also have to factor in that the 6800GS has sm 3.0 and will look a lot better in games.

Though the GTO^2 may be slightly better, they're both within the same price range and the GTO^2 and the 6800GS are very close in terms of bang for buck. IMO the 6800GS is a better deal compared the GTO^2.

You know - I decided to stop trying to explain the 2 cards to ppl. If they want a slower and more expensive GS then so be it - it's their money, there'll be more left for those that actually want a gto2.

x800GTO/2 are great oc pipe unlocking cards for mid level gaming for the price. If people want SM3 that would be the only reason to get 6800GS over this card and still not many games use it and on a mid level card it would go to waste.

Don't bother with the Asus get the Epox 9NPA+ ULTRA board, works great ,I too have x2 dual core 3800+ and 7800GT card.

Isn't the 7800GT and the x1800xl near the same performance?

Anyway, if nVidia get the eVGA one for $300 with the COpper heatsink, it should say CO or Copper on the box.

this is a hard decision, although the ATI is 100 dollars more than the nvidia. What in your opinion is better cause i am like on the thin line between the two i mean if i can pay $100 less that would be good but i dont want to sacrifice much performance for it. also what is better SLI or Crossfire....i know crossfire u can mix cards. And i know that on both when they are in multi gpu mode they switch to 8x but i was also reading some card/mobo can run both at 16x. Also will i need any extra cooling for these items(AMD Athlon 64 3700+ x2, he video card because i might overclock them, and suggestions on cooling and does anyone know if the stock heatsink/fan is good with that processor?)

Okay, calm down. Let's speak in full, COMPLETE, sentences. 😉

Anyway, I don't know where the x1800xl fares along with the 7800 cards, so let's move on for the moment. SLi and Crossfire are just ways to use two cards simultaneously in order to gain performance. Simple idea. In SLi, you need to use two of the same cores (7800GT and 7800GT, or 6800GT and 6800GT, etc). In Crossfire, I don't know much about it, but I haven't heard too much glorifying it yet.

Anyway, no you shouldn't need any extra cooling.

And will you stop saying 3700+ x2, there is no x2 with the 3700+. It's just the 3700+.
