Ok so yesterday I was trying to solve a problem that was plaguing me for a while.

I was trying to reinstall my ATi drivers after doing a driver sweeper and then reinstall the newest batch of ATi drivers.

When I do so, I restarted my computer, and everything went along swimmingly, POST and all, until the Windows Loading screen went dark, and the computer made whirring noises like it usually does under load, and then went back into quiet mode--but nothing happened.

My 27" Dell went into power saving mode.

So I tried getting into Windows Safe Mode, which I accomplished successfully, and then I retrieved the files I needed. This told me my hard drive still functions, and that the issue is elsewhere.

I then reformatted my computer after trying to roll back the drivers with no success. The reformat went well, I deleted my previous partition, etc, got everything going, and then installed my mobo drivers.

Then I installed ATi's newest drivers from their website, as I was installing, the system said I couldn't install a segment because I needed MS .NET 2.0, and then continued installing.

When prompted to restart my computer, I did so, only to find myself experiencing the exact same mess--Windows Loading Screen, followed by nothing, yet the computer continuing to run in vegetable mode.

Reformatted Again, installed mobo drivers, installed MS Net 2.0 this time, then installed an older batch of drivers from Nov 12th 2008.

Same thing.

I have basically tried all I know how to try, does AT have any suggestions? Massive reps to anyone who can figure this out, I think we'll need a lot of brains to figure this one out.

Cheers,
Mac

EDIT: My diagnosis is that something between the mobo and the graphics card is messing up, preventing any display case of whats going on after the Windows Loading.

My System:
AMD 4200 2.2Ghz 1MB L2 (Total Cache)
x1900xt Radeon 512MB
2GB DDR2-800
M2N32 SLI Deluxe
Dell 27" @ 1900x1200

No sorry, its under XP Professional...interesting about the cables...wait a second.

I did switch my DVI cables. I had an older DVI cable from my old 20" Dell, and I switched that for the DVI from the new DELL's box...I wonder if thats the issue.

That'd be pretty damn weird if that was the case...could it be the simple? And how would it explain all the other garbage?

If you can get a hold of another monitor or a VGA cable, you can test to see if the video card is trying to feed your monitor out of range signals. Most monitors go into power saving mode when that happens. In any case, myself and many others are having the same problem, albeit its under Vista, so it may not be the same problem..

Sounds to me like a driver problem, at this point I have no idea how to rectify it.

Ok, so I am now talking to you on my computer. I got it all fixed. Apparently you were right talonz, the DVI cables are different, they're both DVI, but for some reason, the monitor just likes this one better, I have no idea why.

Thanks alot of the help, you certainly bear a lot of credit for it because you gave me the idea, so thanks alot!

Good luck with your problems, perhaps try another DVI cable?

DVI cables have 2 types. DVI-I and DVI-D. DVI-I is analog to digital conversion, and DVI-D is just digital to digital.

Actualy DVI-I is digital + analog DVI-A is the rarely seen analog only DVI & your correct DVI-D is digital only. DVI-I has 4 extra pins near the small flat connector inside the DVI cable to supply the analog signal.

Concerning the Op's issue, I have the same issue w/ an older Radeon 9600 card and a Mag LCD, I have to hook up both the DVI & VGA cable to get it to work Once windows has loaded you can switch from VGA to DVI and that solves the issue at least in my case, the DVI only works in the bios & also in windows after its loaded first on VGA, Was a common problem this specific ATI card. Might be worth giving a shot in your case.

Glad to hear it worked out for you.

Re Arcanedeath's post, I have that issue. When I boot into vista via VGA, then plug in the DVI connector, I can get an image through DVI. As soon as I unplug the VGA cable, the DVI signal is lost too. I guess I'll start another thread sometime about it if I ever need to use Vista over XP =(
