I have an old beater 800mhz computer I've been thinking of making into my multimedia entertainment center.

Only has PCI and I had been leaning towards the ATI 9000 radeon with a separate capture card like the ATI TV wonder.

Obviously this card would not be as strong a 3D performer as the ATI 9000.

For TV/video/capture purposes what does this card lack versus the 8500 or 9700 all in wonder variants?

I dont think this card lacks anything in terms of TV capture. It just doesnt have all the fancy hardware filters that the 9700 AIW has.

ATI has been known forr their EXCELLENT TV output displays. I think I'll be adding a AIW VE to my X-Mas List.

Wow, there goes all those $200 bids for the AIW 7200s that are so rare to find in PCI versions. That is definitely a good move on ATIs part.

I am sure this is exciting for everyone, but does it even have a remote control?

The reason I am saying this is b/c I was like wow this is the solution to my dilema
(my dilema was wanting an awesome agp video card, and also AIW capabilities, but not pay a huge price every upgrade cycle)
then I realized that the ATI site said nothing about any remote which is total crap if you ask me, I mean what is the point?

When I looked into this ages ago:

If you use the ATI card as a secondary PCI card you loose a lot of the AIW features.

Things might be different with XP, but until bill lowers his price I will never know......

ATI Has:

System requirements
Intel® Pentium® 4/III/II, Celeron?, AMD K6/Athlon® or compatible with available PCI slot
64MB of system memory
Installation software requires CD-ROM drive
DVD playback requires DVD drive
Interactive Program Guide requires Internet connection for listing updates
500Mhz minimum processor speed for MPEG-2 video capture
ALL-IN-WONDER® VE is required to be the primary graphics adapter in the PC

So a great card to upgrade and extend the life of an old PC. But not a great 2nd card for your existing uber PC.

I don't know if this is a repost or not, but Rage3D did a review of the AIW VE here:

Actually, I think this card would outperform the Powercolor 9000 PCI. Now, I'm basing my assumption on 3DMark, so it must be taken with a grain of salt, but Rage3D's Madonion score was a good 700 points higher than mine. They got about 5000 with the AIW's stock speed of 260/250, and were able to get quite a bit higher with overclocking. Their test pc setup included a 2.4ghz P4 and 512mb pc2700. My pc has a 2.4 P4 with 512mb pc2100 and my best score on 3DMark is 4300 with a Powercolor 9000 PCI. Granted, they are using faster memory, but I don't think that would have that big an impact. And you have to keep in mind that I can run 4 tests that the AIW cannot. Another hit against the PC 9000 is that by all evidence it cannot be overclocked from its stock speed of 250/380.

Yep, I've got DVI/out, but it's something I'll never use. I use a 15" CRT, so if I have the $250-300 for a cheap 15" LCD, I'll use that on a nice, much larger CRT instead. I use my PCI card strictly for gaming and I want the card that will give me the best fps in the games I play.
